Hess' Heroics Lift Marauders in Overtime

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville field hockey senior Champayne Hess scored both of her team's goals including the game-winner in Tuesday's 2-1, overtime victory over visiting East Stroudsburg.
Millersville (13-2, 9-2 PSAC), the nation's No. 1-ranked team, scored just 5:27 into the game when Hess redirected a Hannah Whitman shot off of a penalty corner. East Stroudsburg found the equalizer at the 55:26 mark when Gabrielle Seibert scored her third goal of the season. The upset-mind Warriors earned a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 65th minute by drawing a penalty stroke. The stroke pitted Ally Roth, the PSAC's leading scorer with 18 goals, against Lauren Sotzin, the nation's leader in goals against average. Roth tried to shoot high but fired over the crossbar.
Millersville had three more chances in the final three minutes of regulation. Three consecutive shots from Katelyn Zapp and Whitman were turned away by Danielle Ard.
The Marauders, who improved to 4-1 in overtime games this season, controlled the overtime session, totaling three shots to East Stroudsburg's zero and holding a 5-0 advantage in corners. The first Marauder shot, from Zapp, went wide. Hess took a shot at the 78:10 mark that was saved. But the third shot was the charm. Off of a penalty corner, Rachel Dickinson cranked a shot from the left side of the circle that skidded past Ard. Hess was waiting with an out-stretched stick and redirected the shot high into the cage.
Millersville finished with a 21-7 edge in shots and a 15-6 advantage in corners. The Marauders controlled the first 35 minutes, out-shooting the Warriors 11-0 and totaling seven corners to the Warriors' zero.
Hess has scored the game-winner in two overtime games now, and she boosted her career goals total to 25, moving her into sixth place on the Millersville career list. Dickinson's assist was her team-leading seventh of the season and it marked her fourth consecutive game with at least one point.
Millersville hoosts Bloomsburg on Saturday at 1 p.m.
