Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's golf team has taken top-five finishes in four of six fall tournaments including one title at the Gettysburg Invitational, but Saturday and Sunday, it faces its biggest challenge yet with the PSAC Championships at Hershey Country Club's East Course in the "Sweetest Place on Earth."
This year's team has been paced by freshman sensation, Shannon Weber. Weber has produced five top-10 placings including two tournament titles (Millersville, Gettysburg) and was named PSAC Women's Golfer of the Week on Sept. 30. Through six events and 10 holes, Weber holds an average of 81.4. The Kutztown Area product is a member at Hershey Country Club and intends to use that experience to her and the team's advantage.
Behind Shannon are a pair of juniors in Jaimie Wharton and Kendal Olear who currently have averages of 84.9 and 90.6, respectively. Wharton turned in the best performance of her career in round two of the Michael Corbett Fall Classic when she shot program bests of 73 in round two and 157 overall. Olear also shot new personal-bests with an 82 at Gettysburg and an 18-hole 179 at Clarion. Weber enters the weekend on a hot streak while both Wharton and Olear come in with the most epxerience having played in the conference tournament twice.
Back for her second PSAC Championship is Danielle Freed who has an 18-hole average of 86.6. Last year, Freed tied for 35th out of 42 golfers in Hershey with an overall score of 183.
Joining Weber as newcomers for this year's squad and likely to make her first appearance in the event is freshman Jennifer Gentry. Gentry has earned two top-10 finishes and four top-25's.
Still a relatively young program, Millersville placed as a team for the first time in 2013, taking seventh when it turned in a 717. Gannon won the event last season with an overall score of 648 while California (Pa.) placed second (650) and Kutztown rounded out the top three (659). 2013 individual medalist Morgan Miller of Seton Hill is back and so is Mercyhurst's Gaelin Carrig, who finished in a tie for third.
The course itself is long and challenging. More information about Hershey Country Club can be found by clicking HERE. Tee time is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. The women will begin on the first hole Saturday and the 10th hole Sunday.
