Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team split its matches with Holy Family and Franklin Pierce on day two of the Marauder Clash. The first match of the day was a thriller, but the Marauders defeated Holy Family, 3-2. In match two, Franklin Pierce was too much to handle and MU fell, 3-1.
Millersville (2-1) and Holy Family (0-3) went back and forth before the Marauders pulled it out in the fifth and final set, 17-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18, and 15-10.
Leading 15-13 in the first set, the Tigers went on a 10-4 run to take the first game, 25-17. The Black and Gold fought back in a second set that went down to the wire. The hosts led by five late, 22-17, before Holy Family battled back and scored six of the next eight points to pull within one, 24-23. Kayla Wallace then knocked home a kill to seal the 25-23 win. The visitors took the third set 25-22 to back the Marauders into a corner where they answered brilliantly.
The home team opened the fourth set on a 7-2 run. Holy Family spotted MU the lead by committing four errors. The Tigers responded again and knotted the score back up at 15-15. From that point on, Millersville didn't look back and outscored its guests 10-3 to tie the score at two sets apiece.
The hosts never trailed in the fifth and deciding set, taking it by a score of 15-10. Again, the Tigers helped the Black and Gold with six errors.
Katie Lesinski tallied 14 kills and Kayla Wallace knocked home 11. In support of the attack, Jessica Franz totaled 21 assists with 17 came from freshman, Erika Smith. On defense, Brooklyn Smith registered a team-leading 30 digs, and Erika Smith was behind her with 15 of her own. Above the net, Mary Paul blocked six attacks.
In the final match of the Clash, the Marauders salvaged only one set and fell to the Ravens in four sets (18-25, 21-25, 25-19, and 19-25).
The first set was dominated by the visitor's offensive attack that posted a red-hot .343 hitting percentage. Franklin Pierce took the set, 25-18. The hosts played much better in the second set and led by as many as six, 16-10. However, Franklin Pierce went on to close the set on a 15-4 run and won the set, 25-21.
The third set went to the Black and Gold because of a .257 hitting percentage before the guests capitalized on eight Millersville errors in the fourth set and won it, 25-19.
Wallace registered nine kills, Franz added 19 assists and Brooklyn Smith led the defense with 28 digs.
Millersville now embarks on an eight-match road trip and will next be in action on Sept. 20. The Marauders will be in Wilmington, Del. as part of the Wilmington Tournament on Sept. 20 and 21 and take on the Wilmington Wildcats in their first game.
