Greensburg, Pa. - The Millersville volleyball team began PSAC play on Friday against conference newcomer, Seton Hill and a familiar foe Indiana (Pa.). The Griffins came out on top in their first ever PSAC match, 3-0, but the Black and Gold rebounded nicely to defeat the Crimson Hawks for the first time since 2006.
In the first ever meeting between the Marauders (4-5, 1-1 PSAC) and Griffins (11-2, 1-0 PSAC), the hosts swept their guests in straight sets (25-15, 25-16, 25-22). Millersville then squared off against IUP (3-10, 0-2 PSAC), a team that had beaten it five times in a row. This time though, the Marauders won in four sets just like in 2006 (25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16).
Seton Hill came out red-hot in the first set posting a hitting percentage of .233. Millersville managed a hitting percentage of just .023. Seton Hill also doubled the Marauders in kills, 16-8, in the first set. The Griffins were in control early taking a 6-1 lead to open the set. The hosts then owned leads of 8-3, 12-6 and 12-8. That was the closest the Marauders got as the home team took set one, 25-15.
In the second set, Seton Hill picked up right where they it off posting an impressive .419 hitting percentage. The Griffins committed just three attack errors and again doubled their visitors in kills, 16-8. The Black and Gold started the set with the momentum storming out to a 6-0 advantage. The Marauders then controlled leads of 6-3 and 9-6 before the Griffins knotted the score up at 9-9. Seton Hill later took their first lead of the set, 11-10 and didn't look back, taking the second set 25-16.
The guests fought hard in the third set, posting a hitting percentage of .216 with 12 kills and only four errors. The hosts' offense, however, was too much to handle as it hit .229 with 15 kills. The Griffins pulled out the third set by a score of 25-22 to claim the match in straight sets.
Three Marauders led the attack with six kills apiece including Katie Lesinski, Rebecca Roman and Mary Paul. Paul hit an efficient .294 in the match and also led the effort above the net with five blocks. Jessica Franz aided the attack with 18 assists. On defense, Brooklyn Smith tallied 10 digs.
In the first set against IUP, Millersville posted a hitting percentage of .275. It sent home 14 kills and had just three attack errors. The Black and Gold went on to take the first set 25-16.
It was much of the same in the second set as the Marauders still managed to hit .200. IUP registered a hitting percentage of just -.081, and Millersville took the set easily by a score of 25-15.
The third set was the only one in which the Marauders had any trouble. The Marauders had 12 kills but nine attack errors, and the Crimson Hawks took a highly contested third set, 25-22.
Millersville rallied in the deciding set, posting its best hitting percentage of the match at .269 with 10 kills and only three errors. Mary Paul led the offense with 14 kills and behind her was Taylor Smith with 10 of her own. Jessica Franz tallied 34 assists to help the attack. On the defensive end, three Marauders tallied double-digit digs including Brooklyn Smith (27), Taylor Smith (16) and Franz (15).
Millersville takes on California (Pa.) and Clarion in California, Pa. on Saturday.Those matches' start times are set for 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Â
