GAME OVERVIEW
• Millersville hosts old nemesis West Chester Saturday and hopes that the under-the-lights environment assists in pulling off an upset of the No. 20 team in Division II. The mistake-filled, four-turnover performance at Mercyhurst in week two must be corrected if the Marauders are to slow down West Chester, which is averaging 50.5 points per game and ranks among the best offenses in Division II.Â
• Millersville is 36-17 all-time in night games and has won three of eight games under the lights since 2009. Millersville has lost its last 16 games against nationally-ranked opponents. The last win came in 2001 when a 2-8 Marauder team upset No. 2-ranked IUP, 30-26.
• The Marauders have shown the ability to move the football on offense.
Ian Sadon rushed for 106 yards in week two and the unit has generated 41 first downs--only five fewer than its opponnents. The Marauders, however, have fumbled eight times, losing three, and have thrown three interceptions. On the flip side, the defense has yet to generate a turnover and has recorded only one sack. The defense has also struggled on third down, allowing opponents to convert 62.5 percent of its third downs. West Chester is a difficult match-up as it enters the week ranked second in the PSAC in scoring offense while the Marauders rank 16th at 11.5 points per game. West Chester also ranks second in the league in rushing offense (257.0) while the Marauders rank 14th in rushing defense (243.0).
• This Saturday's game starts an incredibly difficult stretch of games of the Marauders. Three of the next four opponents are currently ranked in the nation's top 20 and the other opponent is Shippensburg, which won last season's PSAC Championship.
ABOUT THE SERIES
• West Chester has won 10 consecutive games in the series and holds a commanding 63-17 edge in the series with a 16-6 record at Biemesderfer Stadium. West Chester has scored at least 41 points in the last seven meetings and is outscoring Millersville by an average of 42.7-12.8 in the last 10 games.
• West Chester piled up 655 yards of offense in last year's meeting. Rondell White rushed for 131 yards and the team's two quarterbacks combined to throw for 382 yards and seven touchdowns. Erick Brundidge, who is player to watch at wide receiver, scored three times. West Chester quarterbacks have thrown for at least 300 yards in each of the last four meetings.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN RAMS
• West Chester is among the most explosive offenses in all of Division II, ranking 10th with an average of 563.5 yards of total offense per game. The Golden Rams opened the eyes of top 25 voters in week one by dropping 45 points on nationally-ranked New Haven. They followed that performance with 56 points against Gannon, and they now rank seventh in the nation in scoring. The offense is balanced, ranking second in the PSAC in rushing and fifth in passing yards.
• West Chester boasts two of the nation's best players at their respective positions. Rondell White set West Chester's rushing record and led Division II in all-purpose yards a year ago. He is picking up right where he left off, averaging 170.5 rushing yards per game and ranking 10th in the PSAC in receptions with 13. Ronell Williams was an All-America First Team selection at linebacker in 2012, and he is currently averaging 7.5 stops per game.
• If there is a chink in the armor, it is a defense that is allowing 27.5 points per game and gave up 41 to Gannon a week ago. Opponents have moved the ball with success, averaging 382 yards per game and converted 45.2 percent of third downs.
THE LAST TIME OUT
•
Brent Collins' career day and
Ian Sadon's 108 yards rushing could not overcome four turnovers that dug Millersville an early hole in Saturday's 49-7 loss at Mercyhurst.
• Millersville put the ball on the ground four times, losing one fumble. Two field goals were blocked. While the quarterbacks combined to complete 19-of-27 passes,
Connor Casey and
Curtis Frye were sacked a total of six times for 68 yards in losses, and Casey threw three interceptions. The third of the interceptions was returned 45 yards for a touchdown by Colin Kimball in the third quarter.
• Millersville's mistakes snowballed quickly. After 4:22 of playing time and six Mercyhurst offensive plays the Marauders trailed 21-0.
MAKING A MARK
•
David Coates has already set Millersville career records for return yards and return attempts in a season and a career. Now he is trying to zero in on NCAA records. The junior is Division II's active career leader in kickoff returns (89) and return yards (2,060). Gannon's Justin Caliste is a distance second with 66 career returns and Catawba's L.J. McCray trails Coates in return yards by 230.
• Coates leads all Divisions in kickoff return yards per game with an average of 85.8. FBS member North Texas' Brelan Chancellor is in second at 78.1.
• The career record for return yards is 3,265 and belongs to Fairmont State's Zackc Page (2007-10). Page also owns the career returns mark at 133.
• Last season, Coates was the lone Marauder to earn All-PSAC East honors, being named to the second team. He was Millersville's first return specialist to be named all-conference since Bakari Brown in 2004. He led all of Division II in return yards and his 1,156 kickoff returns set a new school record and was the second-most in PSAC history. His 25.7 yards per return ranked 33rd nationally and was the highest by a Marauder since Dondre Gilliam in 1999. He had at least one 25-yard return in nine of 11 games.
• His 97-yard touchdown return against West Chester was the second-longest return in the PSAC and was one of just seven returns for touchdowns. He also had a 61-yard return against against Wesleyan and a 60-yard--the second- return against Shippensburg.Â
BY LAND AND BY AIR
•
Brent Collins totaled 123 yards receiving and
Ian Sadon totaled 106 yards rushing in week two at Mercyhurst. It is only the third time since the start of the 2009 season that Millersville has produced a 100-yard receiver and 100-yard rusher in the same game. Millersville performed the feat only against Cal in 2012 and Lock Haven in 2010.
HELLO TIGHT END
• Junior tight end
Trenton Petrovich made three catches against Mercyhurst, eclipsing his previous career total of two. It was the most catches by a Marauder tight end in one game since Greg Frantz caught three passes against LIU Post in 2010.
COLLINS CATCHING ON
•
Brent Collins is quickly becoming one of the most productive pass catchers in the PSAC. He made his mark in 2011, catching 25 passes for the most receptions by a Marauder rookie since 2002. He made only five catches in 2012, though. He eclipsed that total in week one with a career-high seven catches. He set a new career-high in week two with 11 catches. His 123 yards receiving also set a new career high and marked his first 100-yard game. Game-by-game box scores have been filed since 2002 and no Marauder since then has caught more than 18 passes in the first two weeks of the season.
• Collins ranks third in the PSAC in receptions (18) and is 10th in yards with 185. His 38-yard catch at Mercyhurst was the 17th longest completion in the PSAC this season.
SHARE THE LOAD
• Quarterback
Connor Casey has used a variety of options in the passing game through two weeks. Nine different players have caught at least one pass and six different players have caught two or more. Five different players have a reception of at least 20 yards.
SADON STRONG
• After finishing the 2012 season with 412 yards over the final five games,
Ian Sadon has picked up right where he left off, recording 166 rushing yards in the first two weeks of 2013. He eclipsed the 100-yard mark (108) at Mercyhurst, giving him three, 100-yard games in his last six games.
• Last season, he produced 100-yard games against LIU Post and California (Pa.), and scored five touchdowns including three against Cal. His 108 yards at Mercyhurst came on 21 carries--the second-highest total of his career. Since Oct. 13, 2012, Sadon is averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
• Sadon has carried the ball more than 20 times just twice in his career and both times he has recorded at least 100 yards and a touchdown.
• The last Marauder running back to record three 100-yard games in a six game stretch was Cardoza Jacks in 2008 when he posted four in a row.
SEARCHING FOR SANDERS
•
Dominic Sanders' nagging ankle injury snapped a streak of 33 consecutive starts and a streak of 23 consecutive games with a catch in week one, and he has played only sparingly in each of the first two weeks. The team's top target for the last two years, Sanders is without a catch in 2013. His absence leaves a large void in the Marauder offense as he had caught 38 passes over the final six games of 2012.
• He has improved both his reception and yardage totals each season despite playing with six different starting quarterbacks in his career. Sanders has totaled 112 catches for 1,133 yards. 90 of those catches and six touchdowns have come in the last two seasons. Sanders currently ranks eighth in career catches and trails Alpha Jackson and Shawn Foxworth by just six for sixth place. He trails Don Humphrey's 10th place yardage totals by 479.
WHAT A DEBUT
•Â
Dante Barkley made eight catches for 84 yards against LIU Post in week one. The eight grabs were the most by a Marauder freshman since Omar Sanders caught nine against Bloomsburg in 2003.
WELCOME BACK
•
Doug Henninger,
David Rene and
Neil Moloney were not with the Marauders in 2012, but all started games in years prior, and all are slated as starters in week one in 2013. Henninger, a fifth-year senior, has played in 11 games as a true freshman in 2009, missed the 2010 season, starred in 2011 with 42 tackles and 7.0 TFL. However, he missed the 2012 season. He is back in the middle of the defense and coaches consider him among the best in the league.
• Rene played in 22 consecutive games at corner and safety before missing the 2012 season.
• Moloney as back at Millersville after three years away. He started six games at left tackle in 2009 but transferred to Kutztown the following season. The redshirt junior is back in Millersville's starting lineup at left tackle--just where he left off in 2009.
NEW NAMES, NEW FACES
• Coach
Greg Breitbach made some changes to his coaching staff in the offseason, first bringing in
Jeff Richter and
George Love, who he coached with at North Dakota. Richter was the tight ends coach in 2012 and was also a player at UND while Breitbach coached. Love coached linebackers with Breitbach for one season before moving on to his alma mater, Eastern Illinois. Love will also oversee the special teams.
• During the summer, Breitbach added wide receivers coach
Ralph Clark and outside linebackers coach
Matt Sutjak. Clark is a 16-year coaching veteran, having served as a defensive coordinator at Division I FSC Northeastern and St. Francis. Sutjak is a familiar name for Marauder fans. He was a standout safety for Millersville from 2008-2010. He led the team in tackles twice and led the PSAC in interceptions as a senior. Sutjak will also assist with the special teams.
• The fifth new assistant is
Nate Hinkle, who as a student assistant, will coach the tight ends. Hinkle was a starting defensive tackle for the Marauders in 2011-12.
YEAR ONE A CHALLENGE
• Breitbach is one of four new head coaches in the PSAC, and the 12 returning coaches went just 52-72-2 in their first seasons. Only half of that number posted records above .500. No first-year Millersville coach has posted a winning first season since 1923.
• The four new PSAC coaches have a combined 2-6 record through two weeks, and Bloomsburg's Paul Darragh has both wins. However, he inherited a team that was 10-2 in 2012.
NO FAVORS WITH THE SCHEDULE
• Three of Millersville's opponents were ranked in the preseason top-25 and two others received votes. Three teams (Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and IUP) reached the NCAA Playoffs last year. Millersville's PSAC West opponents finished 1-2-3 in the standings in 2012 and went a combined 29-7.
• After two weeks, three opponents (IUP, Bloomsburg and West Chester) are ranked in the top 20 and LIU Post and California--both undefeated--are receiving votes in the poll.
