Millersville unable to hold on after fast start

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville raced to a 14-0 lead behind a pair of touchdown passes from Brett Nye, but a mistake-filled second quarter doomed the Marauders to a 45-21 loss Saturday night at East Stroudsburg.

Nye, making his first appearance of the season, completed eight of his first 11 passes to eight different receivers and had the Marauders' offense marching. He dropped in a sideline completion to Colin Hastings for 30 yards on fourth-and-two and found Jermaine Tillery on a back shoulder throw inside the right pylon on the very next play for a 7-0 lead. Nye and the Marauders followed that drive with a 71-yard march highlighted by Nakhi Bullock's one-handed basket catch for a five-yard touchdown. But that was the high-water mark of Millersville's night.

The teams traded punts before East Stroudsburg scored on a Deante Crawford three-yard plunge. From there, Millersville's unraveling began. Nye threw interceptions on the next three drives, and a failed fake punt in Millersville territory set up another ESU score. The Warriors turned those four miscues into 28 second-quarter points. Everette Dingle's pick-six early in the second quarter tied the game. All three ESU scoring drives were 50 yards or fewer.

Millersville turned the ball over two more times in the second half, dropping the team's season turnover margin to minus-18. Tommy Hunsicker, who entered at quarterback late in the second quarter, scrambled for a 10-yard TD run to make the score 38-21, but he fumbled on the next drive, and the Marauders fumbled a punt return deep in their own territory as well.

Mekhi Ashby led Millersville's offense with 83 yards on 17 carries. Nigel Meekins recorded his first career interception.

ESU leaned on its ground game, piling up 267 rushing yards and averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Quarterback Harrison Susi led the team with 96 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Millersville closes its season at home on Saturday, Nov. 14, against Edinboro. Millersville's seniors will be recognized before the game.
