Utterback Stifles Marauder Bats as Golden Rams Sweep Ville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 West Chester, Pa. – Tuesday's set of games were big ones for the Marauder softball team, as Millersville traveled to West Chester just a game ahead of the Golden Rams in the PSAC East standings. The Marauders could not hold that lead, and dropped both games to West Chester by scores of 4-0 and 3-0, respectively.

Game one featured a stellar pitching matchup, as two of the PSAC's best went toe-to-toe in the circle. Sarah Bertoni and Devon Utterback of WCU battled and unfortunately for the Marauders, Utterback came out on top. She allowed just three Millersville hits, two by Gabbie Berry, in a 4-0 decision. On the other side of the coin, Bertoni yielded four runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks, striking out four. The loss drops the sophomore pitcher to 12-5 on the year.

With the game scoreless through four and a half innings, the Golden Rams put the first run of the game on the board in their half of the fifth inning, scoring on an RBI single from Jess Schuck. West Chester got three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI singles by Megan Kelly and Kelly Anderson. Berry collected hits for the road team in the fourth and seventh innings, and the team's other hit came from Danielle DiFilippo in the first inning.

The second game was eerily similar to the first game for the visitors, as the Marauders dropped a 3-0 score and managed just four hits. Two of the four hits came from Jamie Motsko, as Utterback pitched the Golden Rams to her second consecutive shutout by allowing just the four hits and three Millersville walks. The Marauders other two hits came from Berry and Ashley Cantiello.

West Chester got on the board first again in the second game. The Golden Rams plated a run in the second inning on a run-scoring single from Jess Norris. The home team got two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on Anderson's two-run single down the right field line. Brianna Andraos, who got the call in the circle in game two, allowed all three unearned runs over her 5.1 innings of work on nine hits and a walk.

The Marauders tried to mount a comeback in the top half of the seventh, putting the first two runners on base with back-to-back singles from Motsko and Cantiello. After both runners moved up to second and third on a passed ball, Millersville's offense stalled again and couldn't bring the runners home, as Utterback retired the final three Marauder hitters in order.

The pair of defeats drops Millersville's record to 23-11 on the year and more importantly, 3-5 in PSAC East play. Despite the team's great start to the year overall, the Marauders now drop to fourth place in the PSAC East division, a game behind West Chester and Kutztown, who are tied for second at 4-4. The top three teams qualify for the PSAC Tournament.

Millersville now turns its attention to a road date with PSAC East foe East Stroudsburg on Friday, before returning home to face Mansfield on Saturday. The doubleheader with the Warriors begins at 2:30 p.m. The two-game set against the Mountaineers at home has the Marauders raising funds to benefit the National MS Society.
