Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. – Saturday afternoon at the Millersville Softball Field, the Marauders were aiming to right the ship on the heels of a doubleheader sweep at West Chester Tuesday. Visiting Mansfield had other ideas, and dealt Millersville two more losses by scores of 4-1 and 6-1, respectively, dropping the Marauders' record to 23-13 on the season.
The Mountaineers got on the board first in game one, hanging two runs on the board in the top of the first inning off of starter
Ashley Cantiello on a pair of doubles and a wild pitch. The Marauders got a run back in the top of the second when
Cara Nance doubled home
Jamie Motsko, who had drawn a walk to lead off the inning.
From there, the Millersville bats stalled, managing just five more hits the rest of the way. But while the Marauder bats went silent, Mansfield saw an opportunity to increase its lead, and did so accordingly. Courtney Bauder took Cantiello deep on a solo shot over the left centerfield fence to lead off the third, making the score 3-1 Mansfield.
Three innings later in the top of the sixth, Kate Pratt broke the game open with a two-run double. The Mountaineers tacked on one more run in the inning, the final run either team got the rest of the way. Nance had two of the team's six hits in game one. Millersville's silent bats can best be attributed to a masterful performance put forth by Mansfield starter Caitlin Klobosits, who allowed just the one run on six hits and one walk while striking out nine in a complete game effort.
The Marauders handed the ball to
Sarah Bertoni in game two, and Bertoni was in search of her 13
th win on the season, which would have tied the team record for wins in a season. Millersville's sophomore ace will have to wait another start to try and tie that mark, as the Mountaineers beat her in the second game.
The Marauder offense, which eked out just two hits in the back end of the day's doubleheader, gave Bertoni a slim 1-0 lead, putting the game's first run on the board in the bottom of the third.
Danielle DiFilippo, who had both of the team's hits in the game, singled home
Ginely Ortiz-Marrero to give the home team a lead for the first time of the day.
Mansfield had an answer in their next at-bat. Reminiscent of the big fly that put the Marauders down 3-1 in game one, Pratt led off the top of the fourth by crushing a Bertoni offering over the wall to tie the game at one. That was where the score remained over the next three-plus innings, headed to extras.
Leading off the eighth with the game locked at one, the Mountaineers took advantage of a Millersville error to begin the inning. The visitors then took the lead on a two-run single by Megan Miller two batters later, making the score 3-1. After Bertoni got the second out of the inning, Mansfield put an insurance run on the board, scoring on another RBI single, this time by Danielle Long.
The Marauders couldn't make any noise in their half of the eighth, being retired in order by Pratt, who picked up her fifth win of the year in the decision. The fourth consecutive loss sends Millersville to its first four-game losing skid of the year.
Millersville has to put the losses behind them quickly, as the team heads to East Stroudsburg for a Sunday showdown with the Warriors. Tomorrow's doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. and signals the first of eight games in a row away from home. The team doesn't return to its friendly confines until Apr. 23, when it hosts Georgian Court in a 6 p.m. start time.
