GAME NOTES
· Millersville and West Chester are two of the top teams in the PSAC East battling for positioning in the PSAC East standings as the season winds to a close. The Marauders (14-6, 11-5 PSAC) are locked in a three-way tie for first place in the division with Shippensburg and Bloomsburg, but Millersville has the tiebreaker over Bloom courtesy of a 2-0 season sweep of the Huskies. The Marauders trail the Raiders currently due to a loss at Ship just over a week ago, but they do have control over their own destiny with a home date against the Raiders looming on the final day of the regular season. The Golden Rams are the team with the most to gain, as they sit one game out of a tie for first place with the other three teams at the top, entering Pucillo Gymnasium with a 10-6 record in PSAC play. WCU got the better of the Marauders in the last meeting between the teams, notching a 94-78 win over the Marauders.
· That tiebreaker over Bloomsburg is due in large part to Millersville's last game, a gutsy 64-62 win on the road in Nelson Fieldhouse on Wednesday. In that game, the Marauders trailed by 17 points at intermission and as many as 19 in the second half before rallying to stun the Huskies. Four of the five Marauder starters (
Mashira Newman,
Aurielle Mosley,
Senada Mehmedovic and
Celeste Robinson) scored in double figures, and each of those players played at least 36 minutes of game action. Had Millersville lost that game on the road, it would be two games behind Bloom and would not control its own destiny in the race for the top seed and a chance to host the PSAC Tournament.
· Newman has been playing well of late, putting up back-to-back double-doubles as her senior season winds to a close. Last Saturday against Mansfield, she delivered her first career double-double in which she also had a double digit assist total and Wednesday against Bloom, she led the second half comeback with 14 points and 11 boards, adding seven steals to round out her performance.
· In addition to her hot play over the past two outings, Newman has continued to climb up the ladder on the all-time scoring list and now sits at fifth in school history with 1,326 points, just 72 behind current Millersville athletic director
Peg Kauffman, who finished her Millersville career with 1,398 points. In the past two games alone (back-to-back 14 point outings) the redshirt senior point guard has leapfrogged three players to move from ninth just a week ago up into fifth. If Newman passes Kauffman and hits the 1,400 point mark, she will be in elite company as one of only four players in school history to do so.
· Newman wasn't the only one to post a double-double Wednesday, as
Aurielle Mosley also did so for the seventh time during her own final season in Black and Gold. She has been every bit as hot as Newman has over the past five games, four of which were Marauder wins. The redshirt senior forward has posted at least 10 points and no less than seven rebounds in each contest. Over the stretch, her averages are 17.2 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Coincidentally, the West Chester game has a feeling of a revenge game for the York native, as it was the last time she was held to single digit scoring. Going back to last season's PSAC Tournament game, it makes two straight single digit scoring performances against the Golden Rams, but count on the York native to bounce back Saturday; prior to this season, in her past six career meetings with WCU, Mosley has averaged totals of 15.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game over her sophomore and junior years combined.
ABOUT WEST CHESTER
· The Golden Rams have been on a hot streak of late, entering Pucillo Gymnasium Saturday with a four-game win streak after posting wins over Bloomsburg, Cheyney, East Stroudsburg and Mansfield, respectively. West Chester sits in second place in the PSAC East, one game behind the Marauders, Huskies and Raiders of Shippensburg.
· Although forward Alex Lennon is a near double-double threat at 11.2 points and 8.4 rebounds per game (leading the team in both categories) the player that did the Marauders in at West Chester in the Marauders' 94-78 loss was Brittany Sicinski, who posted a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Lennon did her own damage, putting up nine points and nine rebounds. West Chester's 94 points was a season-high for the team.
· West Chester has had trouble winning at Millersville, carrying an 11-22 record all-time at Millersville into Saturday's contest. Recent history has been different, as the Golden Rams have split their last six trips to Millersville and haven't lost back-to-back games on the Pucillo Gymnasium hardwood since trips in 2007 and 2008.
· Although Lennon and Sicinski have gotten the headlines, one player that has been hot of late is Dallas Ely. Over the four-game winning streak, Ely has averaged 14.3 points per game on an efficient 48.4 percent shooting, but Ely's biggest importance to West Chester is her downtown shooting. For the season, she is shooting 40.2 percent from 3-point range and has made 63.2 percent of her attempts during the winning streak.
· One of the reasons West Chester can stay in games with the Marauders is due to the Golden Rams' strong presence on the boards. Where Millersville ranks second in the PSAC in rebounding with 43.3 pulls per game, West Chester is right behind the Marauders and pulls down 42.5 rebounds per game. One area where the Golden Rams are deficient is in the turnover department. West Chester turns the ball over at a rate of 22.1 times per game, which is third-worst in the PSAC. Where WCU makes up for it is on the other end, as the Golden Rams force opponents into 21.4 turnovers per game, which ranks sixth in the conference.
· Another strong spot for West Chester is 3-point shooting. While Ely leads the team with her 40.2 percent clip, the Golden Rams have other players waiting on the perimeter to knock down shots around the inside presence of Lennon. As a team, WCU shoots 34.3 percent from downtown, ranking third in the PSAC and one spot ahead of Millersville, which shoots 32.5 percent as a squad.
