MILLERSVILLE, Pa. --- Millersville women's basketball (4-4, 0-2 PSAC) scored 26 fourth quarter points en route to defeating the Jefferson Rams (6-4, 2-2 CACC) in a back and forth match up inside Pucillo Gymnasium Friday afternoon.
The Marauders offense came out of the gates with something to prove after what they perceived to be a disappointing outing on Tuesday against Edinboro where they put up 16 first half points. The Marauders ended the first quarter with 20 points shooting an efficient 57.1% to end the quarter. The Marauders, from the field would not slow down from there, scoring 16 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 36-30 going into the half.
It was held close by Jefferson in the third, but it was all Marauders in the fourth quarter. The Marauders pulled away by shooting 54.6% from the field, 50.0% from three, and hitting 12 of their 14 free throws to score 26 points and stamp their victory, nearing their season high for point in a game.
Kelly Cleaver had a career game for the Marauders, stuffing the stat sheet across the board. Cleaver had 19 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and one steal in today's match up.
Carley Berk also continues to stack impressive performances with another career night from the freshman guard. Berk has been far and away the most consistent three-point shooter for the Marauders in the last three games shooting 41.7% from beyond the arc. Berk exploded for a career high 17 points on 6-8 from the field and 2-4 from three point land. Berk also added two steals, a block, and five rebounds to her scorecard.
It wasn't just two players though, the Marauders had two other double-digit scorers in
Gabby Bowes (12) and
Jillian Crawford (10) while the team worked collectively to out rebound the Rams 46-32.
Here is what Coach
Kira Mowen had to say after the victory:
"This year with our roster that we built, we are able to get subs in and that one of the biggest things is that I like to get them in and get them runs so that deep into Januarary/February when we need them they are ready to go as young players. I do want to play a bench this year, the team knows that and I think our team did a great job today of knowing our roles and producing for us where they are placed."
Wins deep into the winter season are the goal, but nonetheless a huge win for the Marauders. Next, they welcome No. 5 ranked Gannon to town on Sunday afternoon in what seemingly could be a statement to the rest of the PSAC.
