GAME NOTES
· The Marauders are rolling in the month of February, reeling off six consecutive wins to open the month after trouncing East Stroudsburg Wednesday, 76-47. While
Mashira Newman flirted with the ultra-rare quadruple-double (19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, six steals),
Aurielle Mosley posted her 11th double-double of the year and fifth in a row. It also marked the 10th time in her past 11 trips to the hardwood that she has shot at least 50 percent from the field, hitting 9-of-12 attempts against the Warriors. Over her past four games, she has been scorching hot, averaging 22.3 points per game (on a sizzling 54.1 percent shooting) to go along with 13.5 rebounds per game. With the 10 rebounds against East Stroudsburg (her lowest total since the first meeting with Mansfield on Feb. 2), she now stands at 966 for her career and needs just 40 to break Kristy Garner's school record.
· Newman and Mosley are also continuing their respective climbs up the all-time scoring list in Marauder history. The redshirt senior point guard ranks fifth with 1,374 points, just 24 behind current Millersville athletic director
Peg Kauffman for fourth on the career list, but with her recent scoring tear, Mosley is now nipping at Newman's heels in the chase for which player will finish with more career points. The redshirt senior forward has tallied 1,358 points of her own, which ranks sixth. The tandem is just 77 points from becoming the highest scoring pair of classmates in school history. Sara Burcin (No. 1 on the all-time list; 1,543 pts.) and Safiyyah Bashir (No. 11; 1,266), both 2001 graduates, combined for 2,809 total points in their careers, and Mosley and Newman have scored 2,732. The 77 points is attainable as well. The pair of seniors have combined to score 27.9 points per game this year; with three guaranteed games left in the season and if both players score at or above their averages, they will surpass the Burcin-Bashir combo in the team's first game of the PSAC Tournament. Going further, if both players can reach the 1,400-point plateau, they will become the first duo of classmates to accomplish that feat as well.
· The tandem's work on the program record books goes even further than scoring the ball. All-around play has been hallmark for both players, but even moreso for Newman. She is the only player in school history to rank in the top five in points, assists and steals, and with six more blocks, can become the only player in school history to land in the top 10 in points, assists, steals and blocks. Her average rank in points-assists-steals is 3.3, better than any other player in school history. Mosly has been elite in terms of versatility as well. If she can pass Kauffman on the scoring list and move into the top five, she will be just the second woman in the program's history to rank in the top five in points, rebounds and blocks. Shelly Bowie is the ony such player so far to accomplish the feat, but with a strong finish to her senior campaign, Mosley can join her.
· The season is hitting its home stretch, and the team has just two games left on its regular season schedule. After the win over ESU, Millersville's record now stands at 18-6, 15-5 in PSAC play, keeping the Marauders in sole possession of the first seed from the PSAC East in the PSAC Tournament. Millersville controls its own destiny as well; if the team wins out, beating Mansfield on the road Saturday and Shippensburg on its home floor next Wednesday, it will win the PSAC East regular season title.
· As important as the PSAC Tournament is, Millersville doesn't want its season to end there. As the team eyes another NCAA Tournament, the prospects for making it that far are looking good after the first NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings of the year, released Wednesday evening. The Marauders rank sixth, and the top eight teams go dancing. Millersville is also still receiving five coaches votes in the most recent USA Today Poll.
ABOUT MANSFIELD
· Mansfield hosts Millersville Saturday afternoon, and was chiefly responsible for the Marauders catching fire, dropping the previous meeting on Feb. 2 by a score of 75-49. That game kickstarted a six game win streak by Millersville in the month of February. In that game, the Mountaineers trailed by just 10 at the half, down 34-24 and hanging in on the road. After the break, the Marauders put the pedal to the metal, outscoring the Mounties by 16 in the second stanza, 41-25. Jena Matter was the only player to score in double figures for Mansfield in that game, posting 11 points to go with four rebounds.
· The problem for the Mounties in that matchup was turnovers. Mansfield turned the ball over 33 times and forced the Marauders into just 14 on the defensive end. Worse news in terms of the turnovers were that many of the them for the Mountaineers were “live-ball” turnovers, resulting in 35 Millersville points. Even further, the Mounties couldn't capitalize when forcing the Marauders into mistakes, turning 14 Millersville miscues into just seven points.
· If Mansfield is going to have a chance to beat the Marauders, it comes at home. While the Mountaineers are just 3-25 at home against Millersville, they have never won in 32 trips to Millersville. All three of their wins in the series between the teams have come at Mansfield's home gym. Despite that fact, the Mountaineers still haven't beaten the Marauders since they eked out a 61-57 win on their home floor on Jan. 10, 2007. Home cooking is something Mansfield can hang its hat on this year. Four of the team's five wins have come on its home floor, and the Mountaineers have averaged 79.0 points per game in their four home wins. Two of those wins were against PSAC opponents.
· For the season, Matter leads the team in scoring at a pace of 10.5 points per game, but is the only player that the Mountaineers have in double digit scoring. Matter is also the team's top rebounder, pulling in 6.2 boards per game. While the Mounties only have one double figure scorer, seven players score at least 6.0 points per game. Despite that scoring balance, the points have been hard to come by for Mansfield. The team averages just 59.9 points per game. If it can't score more than that against Millersville, it could spell trouble for the Mounties. The Marauders are undefeated when opponents fail to score 60 points in a game, holding a record of 14-0, 13-0 in PSAC contests.
Mansfield does enter with a 1-1 record in its past two contests after dropping 10 in a row and 15 of its past 16 trips to the hardwood. The Mountaineers' large losing swoon came after an encouraging 3-2 start to the season and tenure of first-year head coach Alison Tagliaferri.
