Volleyball Falls to Pitt-Johnstown in Four Sets

Box Score Johnstown, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team took the first set with Pitt-Johnstown but dropped the match in four on Friday night, tightening the race for seeding in the PSAC Tournament.

The Mountain Cats (23-9, 15-6 PSAC) raced past the Marauders (16-14, 11-10) by posting a blistering hitting percentage of .313 with 55 kills and just 13 errors on 134 total attacks (25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 15-25).

The first set opened with five ties and three lead changes in the first 18 points scored. Pitt-Johnstown then used an 8-2 run to take a 17-11 advantage. Millersville answered with an 11-2 run of its own and forced a timeout by the home team. Rhianna Kalescky sent home two kills and the Mountain Cats committed five errors to fuel the run. Twice, Pitt-Johnstown cut the deficit to one before the Marauders called a timeout. Millersville came out of the breather and scored the next point to win the first set 25-23.

The hosts scored four of the first five points to open the second set and increased their lead to 12-6, which forced a timeout by the away team. The Mountain Cats' lead never shrunk below five as they cruised to a 25-14 set two decision. Pitt-Johnstown posted a red-hot hitting percentage of .500 in the set with 16 kills and only two errors on 28 total swings.

Millersville opened the third set on an 8-2 run, which was supported by a kill from four different Marauders. Five straight points from the Mountain Cats pulled them within one, 8-7. The set saw two more ties at 12-12 and 13-13 before Pitt-Johnstown took the lead back and won the set 25-20.

There were five ties in the first 26 points scored of the fourth set. The Mountain Cats then closed the set on a 12-2 run to take the set 25-15 and the match three sets to one. Pitt-Johnstown saved its best for last and posted a hitting percentage of .556 with 15 kills and no errors on 27 attack chances.

Katie Lesinski led Millersville's offense with 11 kills. Erika Smith tallied 15 assists and Jessica Franz added 13 helpers. On defense, Brooklyn Smith registered 16 digs while Lesinski dug out 12 attacks. Mary Paul blocked two attempts above the net.

The Marauders face Lock Haven in their regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both teams are vying for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Division with identical 11-10 conference records. The winner takes the higher seed.
