Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team battled Shippensburg in a competitive match but the Raiders nipped the Marauders in straight sets on Tuesday night in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Shippensburg cruised to a set one victory and stole the momentum from Millersville to sweep the match (25-17, 26-24, 27-25). The Raiders have now won six of the last seven match-ups with the Marauders.
The visitors posted a hitting percentage of .263 in the first set and were too much to handle for Millersville. The Marauders opened the set on a 4-0 run, which was fueled by a pair of kills from Rebecca Roman. Shippensburg then answered right back with a 10-4 run to take a 10-8 advantage. After three ties, Millersville was able to take the lead back 13-12. The Raiders made four attack errors during that stretch to help their hosts. The guests proceeded to score the next four points, had a three-point lead and forced a timeout from head coach, Brian Smith. After the breather, Shippensburg used a 9-4 run to take the first set, 25-17.
The score was tied 3-3 in the second set before the Raiders scored eight of the next 10 and were up 11-5 on the Marauders. Millersville wasn't done yet though as it used a 9-2 run of its own to tip the scales back in its favor, 14-13 and force a timeout by the away team. Five different Marauders recorded a kill to fuel the comeback. Shippensburg won nine of the next 13 points and was back up, 22-18. Again though, with their back against the wall, the Marauders responded. They scored five straight points and had a 23-22 lead before the Raiders called a timeout. All five of the points came on errors by the away team. The break was just what the visitors needed as they went on a 4-1 run and took the set 26-24.
Set number three was a very tightly contested one as well as there were 12 ties and three lead changes. Shippensburg opened the set on a 5-2 run before Millersville knotted the score up at 5-5. From that point on, the teams went back and forth and neither was able to take a lead bigger than three points. With the score tied 24-24, the Raiders scored three of the final four points to take the set 27-25.
Mary Paul led the attack with nine kills and Jessica Franz aided the offense with 20 assists. On defense, Brooklyn Smith tallied 15 digs and Sydney Gallagher set a career-high in blocks with seven.
Millersville will travel to Kutztown on Friday to take on the Golden Bears beginning at 7 p.m.
