Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team took the first two sets with West Chester and looked like it was going to end a 14-match drought against the Golden Rams. West Chester, however, won the next three sets to take the match, 3-2.
The Marauders (5-8, 2-4 PSAC) haven't beaten the Golden Rams (9-6, 1-5 PSAC) since the 2005 season and that trend continued Saturday afternoon as West Chester was victorious in five sets (25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 15-25, 6-15).
The two teams tied four times in the first 18 points of the first set as the score was knotted up at 9-9. Millersville then scored four straight points to go up 13-9 and forced a timeout from its visitors. Three of those four points came by way of errors from the Golden Rams. After that, there was stretch where neither team scored more than two points in a row and the Marauders maintained their lead, 19-14. The hosts scored six of the final nine points to take the set by a score of 25-17. West Chester was their own worst enemy down the stretch as it gave five of those six points to Millersville with errors.
The home team opened the second set with a 6-2 run. Taylor smith sent home three kills including two service aces to fuel the opening furry. The Golden Rams then scored five of the next eight points to pull it within two, 9-7. The Marauders used an 11-5 run to take a 20-12 advantage. Katie Lesinski and Kayla Wallace each tallied two kills apiece during that stretch. West Chester then scored four of the next five points to force a timeout by Millersville. The closest the away team could get was three points and the Marauders took the set, 25-21.
The guests opened the third set with a 7-2 run of their own. The Marauders then scored five of the next seven points to pull within two, 9-7. However, the Golden Rams answered right back with a 9-2 run and were up by a score of 18-9. West Chester maintained at least a seven-point lead and took the third set 25-13.
The only lead Millersville enjoyed in the fourth set was 1-0 before tying the match again at 2-2. West Chester then scored 9 of the next 13 points to go up 11-6. The closest the Marauders could get was three, 11-8 before the Golden Rams doubled them in points 14-7 down the stretch to take the fourth set 25-15.
The visitors opened the fifth and final set on a 7-0 run and were in complete control. The scoring was much more even from then on out but the deficit was too much for Millersville to overcome as it dropped the set 15-6 and the match in five sets.
Mary Paul led the attack with 11 kills and Jessica Franz helped with 21 assists. On defense, three Marauders tallied double-digit digs including Brooklyn Smith (20), Franz (14) and Taylor Smith (12). Two Marauders each tallied two blocks above the net and they were Paul and Sydney Gallagher.
Millersville will face Shippensburg at home Tuesday night beginning at 7 p.m.
