Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team has never lost to Cheyney and that trend continued Friday night as the Marauders swept the Wolves in straight sets.
Millersville (5-7, 2-3 PSAC) returned home to Pucillo Gymnasium for the first time since Sept. 7 to face Cheyney (4-11, 0-5 PSAC) and completely dominated the match (25-11, 25-9, 25-19). The Marauders are now 37-0 all-time against the Wolves.
Cheyney and Millersville opened the first set with a pair of ties and the score was knotted up at 5-5 before the Marauders caught fire. The home team rattled of a 16-6 run to take the set, 25-11. Katie Lesinski sent home seven kills in the first set alone and tallied four service aces.
The two teams were tied at 1-1 to begin the second set before the hosts took control once again. Millersville went on a 14-3 run and forced a timeout by its guests. Kayla Wallace and Rhianna Kalescky each tallied two kills apiece to fuel the run. The Marauders closed the set with a 10-5 advantage to take the lopsided set 25-9.
Millersville opened the third set with a 7-2 lead that featured two kills from both Lesinski and Rebecca Roman. Cheyney then scored six of the next nine points and was within two, 10-8. The Wolves eventually cut the deficit to one at 15-14 but never tied the set. Another 10-5 run by the Marauders earned them the set win, 25-19 and the match in straight sets.
Mary Paul led the attack with eight kills while Lesinski totaled seven. Jessica Franz aided the offense with 17 assists and Erika Smith was right behind her with 15 helpers. On defense, Brooklyn Smith led the team in digs with 23 and has led the Marauders in that category for each of their 12 games. Above the net, Emily Kaledas registered four blocks.Â
Millersville is back at it again Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. showdown with West Chester in Pucillo Gymnasium. Â Â
