Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team defeated Philadelphia University 3-1 in its final non-conference match of the season, improving to 6-2 all-time against the Rams.
Millersville (10-12) fell in the first set in extra points but rebounded nicely to take the next three from PhilaU (10-8) with set scores of 25-27, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-19.
The home team opened the first set on an 11-3 run, which was fueled by three kills from Rebecca Roman and a pair from Katie Lesinski. Philadelphia came right back, though, scoring 11 of the next 16 points to pull within 16-14 and forcing a timeout from Marauder head coach Brian Smith. The set saw five ties with the final one coming at 25-25. The Rams won the final two points to take the set.
The second set was a competitive one as well with 11 ties and two lead changes. Neither team gained an advantage of more than two points before Millersville increased its advantage to 13-9. The guests stopped the Marauder momentum with a timeout and followed with a 6-2 run to tie the set at 15-15. The Marauders' largest lead came at 22-19. Millersville posted a red-hot hitting percentage of .351 with 17 kills and four errors on 37 total attacks.
The Marauders took control of the third set after an 8-8 tie. They used an 8-1 run to take a 16-9 lead. The run was supported by three errors from the visitors and a pair of kills from Mary Paul. Philadelphia scored six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 18-15. Millersville halted the run with a timeout, and never led by fewer than three before closing the set.
The fourth set saw six ties through the first 12 points. Millersville trailed 3-2 but took the next two points and never again trailed. Paul and Roman each registered three kills in the set but the Rams also spotted the home team with 12 errors.
Three Marauders tallied double-digit kills including Lesinski (15), Paul (12) and Roman (11). Roman has accumulated double-figure kills in three of the last four matches. Jessica Franz aided the offense with 25 assists while Erika Smith added 22. Brooklyn Smith led the defensive effort with 21 digs and has now gone over 1,000 in her career with 1,012. Both Roman and Paul each blocked seven attacks.
Millersville will take on Lock Haven Friday at 7 p.m. and PSAC newcomer, Pitt-Johnstown Saturday at 1 p.m.
