Golden Bears' Bite Too Much for Marauders

Box Score

Kutztown, Pa. - The Millersville women's volleyball team took to the road Friday night for the first time since the calendar flipped to October. The Marauders battled till the end but fell in straight sets to the Golden Bears of Kutztown University.

Kutztown (10-9, 4-4 PSAC) and Millersville (5-10, 2-6 PSAC) are now 25-25 all-time against each other after the home team swept the match in straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 30-28).

The Marauders opened the first set on a 3-0 run and maintained their advantage until the Golden Bears were able to finally tie the set at 7-7. The set saw two more ties and the two teams were knotted up at 9-9 before the hosts started to take control. They proceeded to go on an 11-4 run and were in control of the set leading 20-13. Kutztown led by as many as six points until Millersville was able to score three straight and was within four, 24-20. However, the Golden Bears took the next point and the set, 25-20.

It was all Kutztown in the second set as it posted a blistering hitting percentage of .419 with 15 kills to just two errors. The Marauders answered that with just a .062 hitting percentage of their own. The home team asserted themselves early on in the set by scoring eight of the first 11 points. The Golden Bears' lead was never smaller than four and they increased it to as many as 15, 24-9. Millersville scored three of the next four points but that one point was all Kutztown needed as they won the lopsided second set, 25-12.

The third set was the most competitive one of the night that saw 10 ties and five lead changes. Again the hosts opened the set on a big run, this time to the tune of 10-4. A 5-1 run though by the guests put them within two, 11-9. Three of those five points came by way of errors from the Golden Bears. From that point on, neither team could score more than two points in a row until the score was 19-15 in favor of Kutztown and the Marauders scored four straight to tie things up at 19-19. Eight of the 10 ties happened from that point on and the score was tied 28-28 before the home team scored the final two to take the set 30-28.

Katie Lesinski led the attack for Millersville with 10 kills. Two Marauders tallied double-digit assists to aid the offense including Jessica Franz (18) and Erika Smith (10). On defense, Brooklyn Smith and Franz both registered nine digs apiece. This is the first match all season in which Brooklyn Smith hasn't led the Marauders in digs by herself. Above the net, Rhianna Kalescky totaled three blocks.

Millersville will be in East Stroudsburg for a Saturday afternoon match-up with the Warriors beginning at 1 p.m.
