First Half Goals Stand Up for Marauders

Box Score Mansfield, Pa. – The No. 7 Millersville field hockey team built an early lead and kept the pressure on homestanding Mansfield for a 2-1 victory in Friday's PSAC Eastern Division contest.

The win was the second in a row for the Marauders (7-4, 3-2 PSAC East) and kept Mansfield (3-7, 0-4 PSAC East) winless in division play. Samantha Ruane and Kirsten Dively sparked an offense that held a 16-6 edge in shots and a 15-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Ruane scored her fourth goal of the season just 9:10 into the contest. Her first shot was saved but she followed it with another attempt, beating goalkeeper Jamie Twist. Just over 12 minutes later, Dively started a penalty corner that ended up on the stick of Nicole Cave. Cave found Dively, who beat the keeper for a 2-0 Millersville lead.

Despite a constant offensive attack from the Marauders, Twist managed to keep Millersville from extending the lead any further by totaling eight saves—seven in the first half.

Mansfield pulled within one with 16 minutes left on a goal from leading scorer Brianna Velepec—her ninth goal of the season.

Marauder keeper Lauren Sotzin and the Marauder defense blanked the Mountaineers the rest of the way, though. Sotzin stopped two shots and held an opponent to one goal or fewer for the eighth time in 11 starts.

Nine different Marauders accounted for the 12 shots.

Millersville travels to No. 2 Shippensburg Saturday for the second meeting of the year between the programs. Shippensburg won the first game on Sept. 6 by a tight 2-1 score. Game time is 2 p.m.
