Marauders Can't Solve Red Raider Defense in 3-0 Loss

Box Score Shippensburg, Pa. – Traveling to Shippensburg on Tuesday night for its first PSAC East match, Millersville's women's volleyball team was looking to right the ship and climb back to the .500 mark in more than one win-loss column. Ship foiled the Marauders' plans, dropping the visiting team in straight sets, 3-0.

After dropping its past three matches, all at this past weekend's PSAC Crossover at Lock Haven, the Marauders had fallen below even at 6-7 and were 25-26 all-time against the Red Raiders. The loss now sends Millersville to 6-8, 0-4 PSAC East play and widens the all-time gap between the two teams.

The Red Raiders took set one by a score of 25-16, and then dropped the Marauders into a 0-2 hole by taking the second set, 25-22. The home team appeared at its strongest in the middle set, hitting .385 and knocking down 14 kills. Shippensburg closed out Millersville in the third set with a 25-21 win.

Katie Lesinski led the Millersville offense by finishing on 11 kill attempts. Lesinski did not get much help, however, as the rest of the Marauder offense was held at bay and no other Marauder registered more than four kills. Jessica Franz set up the offense to the tune of 21 assists, while Brooklyn Smith dug out 14 attack attempts on the defensive end.

The Red Raider defense stifled Millersville's attack by allowing the Marauders to hit just .083 as a team, blocked three total kill attempts and dug out 48 attack attempts. Shippensburg also had a balanced offense, hitting .250 as a team and having three players with at least nine kills. Andrea Heimsoth was Ship's facilitator, registering a match-high 25 assists.

Millersville can take solace in knowing it split two matches with Shippensburg last season and has the back end of two matches between the teams at home on Oct. 23. The Marauders next take the court Friday in their first home match in nearly a month when they take on the Golden Bears of Kutztown in a 7 p.m. showdown at Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville will hope to exact revenge on Kutztown, which took both matches in 2011 by twin 3-1 scores.
