Pepper Pike, Ohio – After two matches at Ursuline College on Saturday, the Marauders saw their five-match win streak come to an end, but the team is hoping that the back end of the two matches is the start of a new one. Millersville dropped its opener to LeMoyne, 3-1 but rebounded to win its second match of the day over host Urusuline by a 3-2 score.
The first match of the day did not go Millersville's way. LeMoyne dropped the Marauders' record in 2012 to 5-4 while the Dolphins improved to 7-2 by taking the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19 to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. From there, Millersville battled back to win the third set, 26-24, but LeMoyne closed the Marauders out in the fourth set with a 25-17 win.
Millersville had a balanced attack in this match, with three players knocking down double-digit kills.
Katie Lesinski led the way with 11 and
Emily Kaledas and
Kayla Wallace finished on 10 kill attempts each.
Jessica Franz continued her strong play as well. Lesinski added five digs and blocked a kill attempt, while Kaledas hit an efficient .350 on 20 swings.
A week after winning the Mount Olive College Tournament MVP award, Franz set up 40 kill attempts for a match-high in that category, and she also dug out nine attacks. Defensively, the team was led by
Brooklyn Smith, who had 21 digs. The Dolphins, however, were too strong and hit .234 as a team while blocking 12 Marauder kill attempts.
After seeing its winning streak come to an end, Millersville responded well with a five-set win in its second match of the day, improving to 6-4 while dropping Ursuline to 1-11. The Marauders, like the Dolphins in the first match, took a 2-0 lead by winning 25-18 and 25-22 in the first two sets. The Arrows answered with back-to-back set wins of 30-28 and 25-22, but Millersville bounced back once more to win the fifth and final set, 15-8.
This time, it was Wallace's turn to lead the way offensively, as she tallied 18 kills on 27 swings and hit a robust .630. Lesinski came in second on the team in that category, finishing on 15 attempts out of 37.
Samantha Agostini added 12 kills and Kaledas had eight on a solid .316 hitting percentage.
Franz was even better in this match than in the first match of the day, as she registered a double-double with an eye-popping 59 assists and 12 digs. Smith again led the team defensively in digs with 30, and Lesinski and Kaledas added a solo block each. As a team, the Marauders were able to hold the Arrows to a .191 hitting percentage, stifling the Ursuline attack all match long.
Millersville is back in action next weekend when the team travels to Lock Haven for a PSAC Crossover. The Marauders will take on Gannon and Edinboro on Friday, Sept. 21. Those matches start at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
