Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville field hockey team recorded its third straight shutout in a 2-0 win over Slippery Rock Saturday evening.
The Marauders (5-2, 1-0 PSAC East) scored a goal in each half with the first coming off the stick of Rachel Dickinson 18 minutes into the game. The second score came from senior Ashley Weber with 52 seconds reamining in the contest. Goalkeeper Lauren Sotzin recorded her fifth win of the season in an eight save effort. Sotzin and the defense kept Millersville in the game with continuous stops against the Rock offense. Slippery Rock (3-3, 0-1 PSAC West) took 12 shots and 10 penalty corners on the day.
In the first half both teams battle evenly. The Rock had a few chances early but they were thwarted by Sotzin and her defensive unit. At the 18 minute mark, the Marauders forced a penalty corner. Sarah Bomberger took the corner and played the ball into Dickinson at the top left corner of the circle. Dickinson touched the ball to her left and fired a shot from 12 yards out. The ball took a couple tough bounces and sneaked past Rock keeper Courtney Lee, giving the Marauders a 1-0 advantage.
The second half was just as competitive as the first. Both teams had good opportunites to score but both goalies and defenses remained tough. With Millersville holding on to the 1-0 lead, they were able to add an insurance goal with less than a minute to go. Forward Ashley Weber carried the ball 20 yards into the circle, made a quick cut to the right of her defender and took a shot at the goal. The ball again was just out of the reach of Lee and landed in the back left corner of the cage for the 2-0 Millersville lead.
The Marauder defense finished the game strong and recorded the fourth shutout of the year. The third straight shutout was the first time the Marauders have accomplished that feat since 1996.
With the win, Millersville improves to 5-2 on the year and is currently riding a three-game home winning streak. Next up for the Marauders is No. 2 ranked Bloomsburg. Millersville attempts to finish off their four game homestand with a win against the Huskies and remain unbeaten in the PSAC East. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 19 on Chryst Field at Biemsderfer Stadium
