Box Score Millersville, Pa. – Ten years. That's how long its been since the Millersville field hockey team defeated Kutztown. Today, the Marauders didn't just beat the Golden Bears, they controlled the entire game. They outshot the Bears 17-9. They led in corners by two. Most importantly, they kept Kutztown off the board and let a dangerous offensive attack do the rest of the work.
The Marauders (3-2, 1-0 PSAC East) got on the board early on a rocket by senior
Ashley Weber. Millersville moved the ball into the circle and
Samantha Ruane fired a shot at goalie Karly Waltman. Waltman made a great save but let the rebound fall to Weber ten yards away. Weber took a touch to her right and then blasted a shot to the far left corner, giving the Marauders the 1-0 advantage only four minutes into the match.
In the second period Millersville dominated play. The ball was in the Marauder offensive half of the field regularly and the Marauder squad kept firing off shot after shot.
Six minutes into the half defender
Rachel Dickinson took a hard shot off a corner that was saved by Waltman. Again, Waltman let the ball fall in front of the cage. After a brief skirmish, it was deflected to
Sarah Bomberger who lofted it past a diving Waltman into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Millersvile added the extra insurance goal with only six and a half minutes to play. This time it was senior
Paige Morrison who was relentless around the cage. The Marauders worked the ball down the right side of the field and played the ball across the goal face.
Lauren Gerhart hit a quick pass to Morrison who buried the ball into the net finalizing the 3-0 victory.
Goalkeeper
Lauren Sotzin deserves much of the credit for blanking the Kutztown offense. She recorded five saves on the day, matching a season high.
This win came as no surprise to head coach
Shelly Behrens. “We know we have a good team," said Behrens. "Structurally we have played excellent so far this season, we just haven't gotten the results we wanted in the past two games. They believed in themselves and trusted what we were doing as a team and went out there and put it all together."
The Marauders lost 18 straight to Kutztown entering today's game. It was not only going to take a great physical performance to top the Bears, a great mental approach was necessary as well.
“The girls stuck to the game plan and they really stayed focused," said Behrens. "They didn't get too high or too low. I just got out of there way and let the girls play their game.”
With the win the Marauders move to 3-2 on the year and now have confidence heading into the rest of the season and PSAC East play.
“This win gives us confidence and reinforces that we are good, we have earned this, and we have a great team so let's go out and do it,” said Behrens. “I'm happy for the girls, they deserve it. They took control and left no doubt."
Millersville's next game is this Friday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. against PSAC West foe Mercyhurst at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.
