Millersville, Pa. – Yesterday did not go according to plan, as the Marauders dropped both matches. Saturday's pair of matches got off to a rough start, as Millersville fell to Quincy in straight sets, 3-0. The Marauders recovered, however, to claim their first victory of the year over East Stroudsburg in the team's final match of the Marauder Clash, sweeping the Warriors to the tune of a 3-0 score.
In the first match, Millersville hung tough with the 4-0 Hawks, but came out on the losing end of 25-20, 25-22 and 25-23 set scores. A pair of newcomers shared the lead in kills, with
Nicole Geary and
Samantha Agostini knocking down six kill attempts apiece.
Jessica Franz led the team in helpers with 14, and
Brooklyn Smith tallied 16 digs to pace the Marauders in that category.
The Hawks, however, proved too much for Millersville, stifling the Marauder attack. The home team hit just .078 as a team. Briann Joslin and Samantha Haegele paced the Quincy attack, knocking down nine kills each, and Joslin hit .450 to lead the Hawks.
The Marauders rebounded in the second match, dropping PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg in a sweep. Set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20 were more than enough to power Millersville to its first win of 2012.
Samantha Booth led Millersville's offense in the back end of the day's matches with nine kills on an efficient .615 hitting percentage.
Katie Lesinski and
Katelyn Ort each knocked down five kill attempts.
Millersville passed the ball well and hit for a higher percentage in its second match, totaling 28 assists out of 32 kills and hitting for a .113 average as a team. The Marauder defense was even better, digging out 37 kill attempts and blocking eight while holding the Warriors to a miniscule .010 attack percentage. East Stroudsburg committed nearly as many offensive errors (26) as it had kills (27).
Next up for the Marauders is the Mount Olive Tournament at Mount Olive College on Sept. 7 & 8. Millersville will play UNC Pembroke and St. Augustine's on Sept. 7 and Virginia State and Mount Olive on Sept. 8. The next home match for Millersville is scheduled for Sept. 22 against Mercyhurst at 12 p.m.
