Marauders Come Up Empty on First Day of Marauder Clash

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Millersville, Pa. - The host Millersville women's volleyball team wasn't provided with much home court advantage Friday in the opening day of the Marauder Clash. The Marauders fell 3-0 to Wilmington in the opener of pool play and then dropped a 3-2 decision to Concord.

The two losses likely put the Marauders out of contention for the tournament championship as they have just one match remaining before bracket play begins.

Wilmington took advantage of Marauder miscues in the opening match. Millersville committed five service errors and tallied a .088 hitting percentage in the match. The score remained close throughout, though. Millersville held a 20-19 first-set lead on a kill from freshman Samantha Agostini, but Wilmington answered with a kill and rattled off four consecutive points to build a 23-20 advantage. Millersville pulled within 24-23 on an attack error, but the Wildcats finished the opening set with a kill from Kaitlin DiGiacinto.

The second set also remained close, with the score tied 15-15 until another DiGiacinto kill sparked a 9-1 run for the Wildcats. They ended up taking the set 25-18.

The Marauders nearly pushed the match to four sets, but once again, Wilmington pulled away late. With the score tied 20-20, an attack error gave Wilmington a slight lead it would not relinquish. DiGiacinto struck again, and the Wildcats pulled away to 24-21 before the Marauders posted back-to-back kills from Rebecca Roman and Katie Lesinski. A Marauder error was the clincher for Wilmington, though.

Roman led Millersville with seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage. Freshman Kayla Wallace posted a team-high five block assists.

Against Concord, Millersville fell 25-21 in the opening set, but roared back to take sets two and three by scores of 25-15 and 25-14. In those sets, Millersville was sharp, hitting .316 in the second and .268 in the third. Lesinski posted six kills without an error in the second set, and Jessica Franz delivered 10 assists in the set. In the third, Wallace posted five kills and no errors on 11 swings and added three block assists.

But it quickly turned for the Marauders. With the match tied 5-5 in the fourth, Wilmington's Sarah Jones served up seven straight points. The Marauders pulled within three at 21-18 but could not pull even. With momentum on their side, the Mountain Lions ran away with the fifth set, 15-9.

Lesinksi totaled 16 kills and a .229 hitting percentage in the match. Franz totaled a career-high 54 assists, four service aces and three kills. Emily Kaledas and Samantha Agostini both added 12 kills, and Wallace finished with 11. Brooklyn Smith led the team with 23 digs.

Millersville returns to the court in Pucillo Gymnasium on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Quincy.
