Millersville, Pa. – Millersville entered Saturday's home double dip with California (Pa.) with hopes of knocking off the 24-6 Vulcans after winning three of its past four. However, despite two strong showings in the circle from
Alicia Hughes and
Sarah Bertoni, respectively, the team came out on the wrong end of 2-1 and 3-1 scores at the hands of Cal.
Hope Spancake was as dominant as advertised in game one, striking out twelve Marauders in a complete game. Millersville managed just four hits off the sophomore starter, one each from
Ally Homa,
Gabbie Berry,
Ashley Cantiello and
Danielle DiFilippo. On the Marauders' side Hughes, who took the ball in game one, turned this into a pitching duel, allowing just two runs on six hits and fanning four Vulcan batters in her own complete game.
The Marauders looked like they were going to steal the first game after falling behind 2-0 courtesy of first and fourth inning Vulcan runs. In the sixth, Millersville put together a rally after
Wendy Wolff scored the team's lone run of the game. Berry knocked in Wolff, reaching first on a fielder's choice. The Marauders packed the sacks after Cantiello's single with just one out. Spancake, however, wiggled out of any further damage by retiring the next two batters and finishing off Millersville in the seventh.
The home team struck first in game two, getting to starter Kaitlyn Schilling with a first inning run and sending her back to the dugout after she recorded just two outs.
Allison Chew led off the game with a single and was advanced to second on a bunt by Homa. Chew scored two batters later on a single from Cantiello for Millersville's only run of the game. After DiFilippo followed Cantiello's single with a walk, Schilling's day was done.
Her replacement didn't fare much better as Madison Cashner got out of the first inning jam, but created one for herself after Cal tied the game with a run in the top of the second. The first two batters of the Millersville second reached base, as Bertoni led off with a double and Wolff followed with a single. After both runners advanced into scoring position, Cal head coach Rick Bertagnolli had seen enough, calling on Spancake to pitch her second game in a row.
Again the sophomore delivered, shutting down the Marauder bats to the tune of just three more hits over the next six innings. As good as Spancake was on the Cal side, Bertoni battled and kept Millersville in the game. The freshman allowed just three runs (two earned) and whiffed seven batters in a complete game outing. Cal plated the winning run in the top of the third.
The two Millersville losses in the doubleheader send the Marauders to 14-24 on the season, but the team's chances of making the playoffs are still intact. The team's final 10 games are at home with eight against PSAC East competition. The road to the PSAC Tournament continues for Millersville Tuesday against West Chester, with whom the Marauders split two games earlier this season. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
