Kutztown, Pa. – The Marauders faced their biggest test of the season so far Tuesday and ran into a buzzsaw in the form of 30-1 Kutztown, which hadn't lost since a 3-2 defeat on March 9. Millersville dropped both games by respective scores of 2-0 and 10-2.
Millersville hung tough in a strong pitching performance from
Alicia Hughes in the first game. Hughes took a second-straight tough loss, dropping her record to 3-9. She allowed two runs (one earned) in a complete game outing, walking none and striking out two. The Golden Bears generated seven hits off the Marauder starter.
Meanwhile, the Marauders managed just three hits against Kutztown starter Samantha Derr, who improved her record to 15-0.
Allison Chew,
Ally Homa and
Gabbie Berry collected the only hits for Millersville in the defeat. Chew and Berry's hits were doubles, while Homa registered a single.
The team's first chance to score came in the third inning, trailing 1-0. Chew doubled to lead off the inning and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Homa. However, the junior was stranded on third after Derr induced two straight groundouts to end the threat. The Marauders' second and best chance to score came in the fifth inning, when Chew walked and Homa singled in back-to-back plate appearances to put two on.
Derr remained strong and induced a 4-3 twin-killing to again shut down the Millersville chance. The Golden Bears collected an insurance run in the fifth to go up by a 2-0 score. Kutztown's starter allowed just one base runner the rest of the way on a walk in the seventh inning.
Kutztown's bats came alive in game two, to the tune of 10 runs, while Millersville scored just two and again had three hits. The Marauder runs came courtesy of a two-run blast by Chew in the third inning, her second of the season. Chew had two hits to lead the offense and
Alexandra Hoops added a hit, starting as the designated player.
The losses drop Millersville's record to 11-21 overall (2-4 PSAC East). The team returns home tomorrow for a doubleheader with Bowie State, with which it owns a 4-0 record all-time. First pitch from the Millersville Softball Field is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
