Millersville, Pa. – Coming into the day, Millersville needed a sweep of Shippensburg to clinch a berth in the PSAC Tournament. The Marauders, however, only came away with a split against the Red Raiders, winning the first game 2-0 but dropping game two by a 5-2 score to finish their season at 18-30, 6-10 in the PSAC East.
The Marauders got a strong outing from
Alicia Hughes in the first game, as she pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out four batters. She finished the year with a 7-13 record by getting the win.
Millersville gave Hughes two runs of support, pushing across a run on an
Ashley Cantiello double that plated
Ally Homa in the bottom of the third. The second Marauder run came two innings later, when
Wendy Wolff, who had singled to start the inning, scored on a successful steal attempt by Homa. After the Marauders gave Hughes the lead in the third, she allowed just two base runners the rest of the way.
In game two, with a spot in the PSAC Tournament on the line, Millersville couldn't come through with a victory. Starting pitcher
Sarah Bertoni was strong, allowing five runs, only one of which was earned in a complete game effort. Millersville's bats, however, were held to just two runs on four hits.
Already trailing by a run entering the bottom of the first, Millersville knotted the game up at one when
Allison Chew scored on an RBI single by
Gabbie Berry. Shippensburg, however, responded for four unearned runs against Bertoni in the top of the second inning.
The home team got one back in the bottom of the second when Hughes led off the inning with a solo blast over the left-centerfield wall, cutting the deficit to 5-2. That homer, however, would cap the scoring. The only hit over the final five innings belonged to the Red Raiders, who had a base knock in the top of the seventh.
Millersville ends the season a game out of a playoff spot in the PSAC Tournament. Looking forward to next year, the Marauders lose only two players off this season's roster. Homa is the only senior to graduate, and Chew will transfer because of her major. Both players were honored at the pregame Senior Day ceremonies. The team can build on its record and a large amount of returnees to make a run at the PSAC Tournament next season.
