Millersville, Pa. – In the second to last doubleheader of the season for Millersville, the team matched up with the University of Sciences in a nonconference clash. Despite dropping game one by a 2-1 score, the Marauders rebounded to take the second game 2-0.
Marauder starter
Alicia Hughes suffered the tough loss in the first game. She pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and two earned runs while walking three and striking out four. However, she was outdone by a combined effort from Devil pitchers Julie Shaw and Stacey Robertshaw, who combined to allow six Millersville hits and only one run.
All of the scoring was done in the first inning. The Devils got out to a 2-0 lead before Millersville ever came to bat. When the Marauders did come to the plate in the bottom of the first, they used a hit and took advantage of two Devil errors to score
Ally Homa, who led off the inning with a single.
The Marauders, however, could not push the tying run across over the next six innings. Homa led the offense with two hits, while the team got one each from
Ashley Cantiello,
Taylor Odell-Smith,
Wendy Wolff and
Allison Chew.
In game two,
Sarah Bertoni pitched the Marauders to her third complete game shutout of the year by scattering just four Devil hits and walking one. Bertoni struck out two. As the rain fell in the second game, Homa continued her strong play in the doubleheader. The senior was 3-for-3 with a solo shot over the left field fence that broke the scoreless tie in the third inning.
The other Millersville run came in the same inning after back-to-back doubles from Cantiello and Danielle DiFIlippo. The one other hit for the Marauders came from
Gabbie Berry. With the win, Bertoni improved her freshman season record to 8-14.
The split pushes Millersville's record to 17-29 with two big games remaining. Saturday will end the regular season for the Marauders in a crucial home tilt with PSAC East rival Shippensburg. A sweep in the Senior Day doubleheader could bring the team a berth in the PSAC Tournament along with outside help from other teams. The Marauders and Red Raiders split a doubleheader at Shippensburg earlier this season.
