Millersville Swept by West Chester in Crucial PSAC East Doubleheader

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Millersville, Pa. – Coming into Tuesday's games, the Marauders had a chance to capitalize in division play on a team beneath them in the standings. Millersville, however, could not take advantage and dropped both games of a home doubleheader against the West Chester Golden Rams.

The team dropped game one by a 13-1 margin. Marauder starter Alicia Hughes took the loss, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. The team collected just six total hits against Golden Ram starter Devon Utterback, with two coming off the bat of Ashley Cantiello and one each from Hughes, Allison Chew, Stephanie Kulp and Taylor Odell-Smith.

Despite getting just those six hits, the Marauders were able to take a 1-0 lead in the second against Utterback when Hughes scored the team's only run on an errant throw by West Chester catcher Nicole Cruts. Hughes raced home from third, beating the throw back to the plate. That was all Millersville would get, and the Golden Rams scored 13 unanswered runs to steal the win from the Marauders.

The homestanding Marauders lost a heartbreaker in game two, 7-3. After falling behind 3-1 in the third inning, Millersville plated runs in back-to-back innings, scoring in the fourth and fifth, respectively. Danielle DiFilippo knocked in the team's first run with an RBI double in the bottom of the first with the Marauders trailing 1-0.

Millersville would get the tying runs with small ball. In the fourth, Odell-Smith came around to score after singling to lead off the inning. She scored when Chew was caught in a rundown stealing second. The Marauders got their third and final run in the fifth inning, scoring on an Emily Sneeringer RBI double that brought home Kulp. With the game tied at three, the Golden Rams took over, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to propel West Chester to a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Marauders still remain in the middle of the playoff hunt in the PSAC East with a 3-7 record in the division. In the middle of 10 straight games at home to end the season, Millersville has another crucial doubleheader Friday against East Stroudsburg with game one starting at 2:30 p.m. The Marauders split a twinbill with the Warriors on the road earlier this season.

The Warriors currently hold a divisional record of 5-5 after sweeping a doubleheader at Shippensburg Tuesday. Those wins leapfrog East Stroudsburg into second place in the division past the Red Raiders, making the Marauders' Friday matchup that much more important. A sweep by Millersville would tie it with East Stroudsburg and give the Marauders the momentum they need in their push toward the PSAC Tournament.
