Marauder Bats Come Alive to Split with Goldey-Beacom

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Millersville, Pa. – Millersville couldn't put enough runs on the board in the first game at home Sunday against Goldey-Beacom, dropping game one by a slim 3-2 margin, but it bounced back with a strong 5-1 victory in game two heading into a pivotal PSAC East showdown with division-leading Kutztown.

The Marauders made starter Alicia Hughes the tough-luck loser in the first game, as she surrendered three runs but only one earned and took the loss despite five strong innings. Hughes allowed six hits and a walk, striking out two.

The game was deadlocked at one after both teams put a run on the board in their respective second innings. Millersville's came courtesy of a Jamie Motsko sacrifice fly that scored Danielle DiFilippo. Just after Motsko gave Hughes the lead in the bottom of the fourth on her first homer of the year, Hughes gave the lead back in the fifth inning on a two-run double by Ashley Zaccaria, ending the Marauder starter's day.

Millersville mustered just five hits against game one starter Shannon O'Hara, who worked four innings of two-run ball for the win. The other three hits the Marauders got were off the bats of Allison Chew, Ally Homa and Emily Sneeringer.

Game two saw Sarah Bertoni shut out the lights on the Lightning attack, while the offense brought the thunder. The freshman pitched a complete game three-hitter to lift the Marauders to a doubleheader split. In the win, Bertoni allowed just one run, walked two and struck out three.

After another long deadlock at one, the Marauders broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning. Ashley Cantiello opened the Millersville scoring in the first with the team trailing 1-0 when she delivered an RBI single to plate Chew. After three-and-a-half scoreless innings, the Marauders came through with the offense they were looking for all day long.

Chew again singled to lead off the inning – the junior was 3-for-7 total on the day – and Homa followed by being hit with her second pitch of the game. Catcher Gabbie Berry came up clutch with a two-run double to increase her team lead in the RBI category to 16. Berry scored two batters later on a DiFilippo single and Millersville pushed one more run across for a total of four in the inning.

From that point Bertoni, who was on cruise control all game, allowed just a hit and a walk in the sixth. She pitched a perfect seventh to secure the Marauders' 11th victory of the season, upping their record to 11-19.

The team now turns its attention to a big doubleheader Tuesday at PSAC East rival and division leader Kutztown. The Golden Bears represent a formidable challenge, as they will carry a 30-1 record into Tuesday's clash, winners of 22 straight games.

Kutztown has not lost since a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Georgian Court March 9 in Fla. Behind in the standings by three games, this pivotal tilt is the Marauders' chance to gain ground in the division standings. First pitch of the twinbill Tuesday is slated for 2:30 p.m.
