Lock Haven, Pa. – The Marauders faced a stiff test Saturday on the road at PSAC Central Division leader Lock Haven and held their own against the Bald Eagles, splitting the twinbill. Millersville took game one by a 5-1 score but dropped the second game, 6-4.
Alicia Hughes improved her record to 3-7 on the season in game one with a strong complete game outing, allowing just one run on eight hits and striking out three. In the process, the junior lowered her ERA to a team-best 3.90.
The Quakertown native was given all the runs she needed when Millersville exploded for three in the top of the third on three hits and a Bald Eagle error. The first three batters in the inning reached base with
Ashley Cantiello scoring the game's first run when
Emily Sneeringer reached on a Lock Haven miscue.
Jamie Motsko would plate the Marauders' second run with a RBI single, and
Wendy Wolff capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice groundout to score Sneeringer. Lock Haven rallied in the next half-inning, getting the only run it would score against Hughes.
From there, it was all Millersville. Hughes worked through the final three innings, allowing five hits but stranding all five runners. Meanwhile, the Millersville offense put up two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. After the first two batters of the inning reached base,
Ally Homa and
Gabbie Berry knocked them in with back-to-back RBI singles.
In game two, the Marauders were looking for their first sweep of a PSAC opponent.
Sarah Bertoni, however, took her second-straight loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits with four punch-outs in a complete game.
Like Hughes, Bertoni was given a lead as the Millersville offense struck first for two runs in the top of the third. Homa helped her freshman pitcher out with a two-run single, allowing
Taylor Odell-Smith and Motsko to score. But the Bald Eagles would start their comeback in their half of the third, scoring a run to decrease their deficit to 2-1.
The Marauders would make it a two-run lead again in the top half of the fourth with a Motsko single scoring
Stephanie Kulp, who was pinch running for Cantiello. The game would remain at 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Lock Haven broke through for four runs against Bertoni on the strength of Nicole Smith three-run blast, making the score 5-3. Lock Haven would never look back.
The Bald Eagles allowed Millersville to pull within 5-4 in the sixth when Odell-Smith drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run. The Marauders were in line to make more noise but a ground out left the bases loaded, ending the inning and effectively the team's chance at a win. Lock Haven scored an insurance run in the bottom of the inning and set the Marauders down in order to close out the game.
Millersville's record now stands at 10-18. The team takes to the home field tomorrow against Goldey-Beacom College with a good chance to improve its record as the Marauders sport a 9-4 record all-time against the Lightning. The first pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
