Game 2
Millersville, Pa. - With the PSAC East schedule starting Friday, the Millersville softball team picked the perfect time to play its best softball of the season. The Marauders won for the sixth time in seven games Wednesday, sweeping visiting Holy Family by scores of 2-1 and 6-1.
Wednesday's doubleheader was just the second home date of 2012 for the Marauders (7-13), and they improved to 3-1 at home and have now won four in a row. The team has also allowed just three runs in those four wins.
Junior
Alicia Hughes (2-6) starred in the circle and at the plate in the opener, tossing a complete game while not allowing an earned run. Holy Family (8-8) managed six hits against her, but Hughes walked none and struck out four.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but Hughes gave her team the boost it needed in the bottom of the inning when she led off with a solo homer.
Taylor Odell-Smith followed with a triple and scored when
Wendy Wolff grounded to the second baseman.
The two runs was all the Marauders needed. Holy Family threatened in the seventh and seemingly put runners on first and third with one out. The Tigers, however, used an illegal batter, which resulted in an out and the lead runner returning for first base. That effectively ended the threat.
Sarah Bertoni, who fired a no-hitter just 24 hours earlier, took the ball in game two and scored her second win of the season. She worked the full seven innings, allowing one run on six hits. She also struck out five.
The Millersville bats came to life in game two. Leadoff hitter
Ally Homa set the pace by going 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Millersville scored at least once in each of the first three innings. Freshman catcher
Gabbie Berry hit her second homer in as many days.
Taylor Odell-Smith drove in two with a double. Nine different Marauders recorded at least one hit.
Millersville begins an eight-game road swing Friday at West Chester.
