Bertoni Fires No-Hitter in Marauders' Doubleheader Sweep of Rams

Game 1 Box | Game 2 Box

Philadelphia, Pa. – It was a day of firsts for Marauder softball, but none was bigger than the first no-hitter on record in the history of the program. Freshman pitcher Sarah Bertoni got her first collegiate win in rare fashion, twirling the no-no in the first game of the day's doubleheader against Philadelphia.

Bertoni was winless going into today's first matchup with Philadelphia, but broke out of the slump in a big way with the no-hit outing, out-hitting the Rams by herself, 1-0. The freshman was just one walk and two Millersville errors from a perfect game as the Marauders defeated the Rams 7-0 in game one of the twinbill.

Bertoni also added two strikeouts to her team-high total of 34 for the season. The Greater Nanticoke High School product overshadowed what was also the team's best offensive performance of the season. The seven runs posted on the scoreboard by Millersville are the most the Marauders have scored in a game this season.

While her biggest contribution came from inside the circle, Bertoni kicked off the Marauders offensive onslaught at the dish, with a RBI single in the first inning, scoring Ally Homa. That run provided her with all the run support she would need.

Millersville increased its lead to 6-0 with a five-run second inning, capped by a three-run shot by Gabbie Berry, the first of the freshman catcher's career. Berry scored the final run of that huge second inning and scored the final run of the game when she was singled in by Jamie Motsko in the top of the fifth.

Berry led the team in the first game with three RBIs and two runs scored. Homa knocked in two runs and scored another, as well as drawing two walks for a .750 on-base percentage in the game. Wendy Wolff got in on the action, recording her first career hit in the game.

But game one belonged to Bertoni. She sealed the dazzling performance by striking out the final Ram hitter looking. Her unprecedented feat improved the team's record to 4-13 and lifted her personal record to 1-7.

Game two saw the runs keep coming for Millersville, as it defeated the Rams in the back end of the doubleheader by a 5-1 score, jumping their record to 5-13. Since starting the year at 1-12, the Marauders have won four of their last five games. This time, it was another freshman pitcher who got the win as Ashley Cantiello improved her record to 2-1 by allowing four hits and one earned run in four innings. Stephanie Kulp notched her first career save to end the game.

Again the Millersville offense was sparked by Berry, to the tune of her first career three-hit game at the plate. The catcher knocked in another run to drive her season total to a team-high of 10. Just like in game one, the Marauders starting pitcher knocked in as many runs as she would need, with Cantiello providing the first two runs of the game on a two-run double with no outs in the fourth. Millersville would get its third and final run in the inning on another Motsko RBI single two batters later.

After the Rams got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Marauders answered with another run of their own in the fifth inning when Homa came home as Berry was attempting to steal from first. Berry was caught in a rundown, but the Millersville damage was done. Berry ended the Millersville scoring in the final inning with a RBI double.

In the Rams' final at-bat, Philadelphia tried to mount a rally, putting two runners on base against Alicia Hughes, who pitched two scoreless innings in the game. With two on, Kulp came on to shut down the Rams offensive threat, registering three straight outs to end the game.

Millersville looks to continue its winning ways tomorrow in a double dip with Holy Family at home, starting at 2:30 p.m. The team is 7-1 all-time against the Tigers, winning seven straight. The Maraudes have not lost to Holy Family since 2001. Live stats and video of the game can be seen on MillersvilleAthletics.com.
