Hughes Rediscovers 2011 Form in Complete Game Shutout of Bridgeport

Box Score

Clermont, FL – The Marauders only had one game to play on the schedule on Friday, and took advantage of it, besting the Purple Knights of Bridgeport 1-0 in extra innings on an Ally Homa sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Millersville starts its first winning streak of the season at two games. Last night, the team snapped a 12-game losing streak and with their second win in a row, the Marauders improve to 3-12 on the season. For the second time this season, the team won in walk-off fashion.

Marauder starter Alicia Hughes improved her record to 1-4 on the year, pitching a complete game shutout. Hughes struck out five batters and allowed only three hits over her eight innings of work, rediscovering the form that made her one of the top pitchers in the PSAC during the 2011 season.

In the winning inning, Millersville did not even need a hit. Starting with Sarah Bertoni placed on second because of the international tiebreaker rule, she was moved to third when Taylor Odell-Smith reached on a Purple Knight error. Bridgeport pitched around pinch-hitter Jamie Motsko, walking her on five pitches.

With the bases loaded and no outs Homa, Millersville's lone senior, came to the plate. On the first pitch of the at-bat, she sent a fly ball to left field. Bertoni came running home to score the winning run.

Homa and Ashley Cantiello provided Millersville with the team's only two hits of the night. The Purple Knights committed three errors, while the Marauders provided solid defense behind Hughes, committing just one.

The Marauders have one game left in their Florida spring trip, turning around and playing tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Stonehill College.
