Clermont, FL – The Marauder softball team was seeking its first win in a week-and-a-half Monday. Millersville, however, failed to get its second win of the season, dropping games to Winona State and Minot State.
The ball was jumping off of bats in the first game as the teams combined for 18 hits and five home runs. Unfortunately for Millersville, Winona State had 12 of those hits and four of the home runs, leading to a 13-3 defeat of the Marauders.
Millersville starter
Alicia Hughes (0-4) was given a run of support in the bottom of the second inning, when
Danielle DiFilippo singled in
Emily Sneeringer for the first run of the game. After spotting the Marauders a 1-0 lead, the Warriors mounted a furious rally against Hughes in the top half of the third, putting seven runs on the board, aided by three Millersville errors and capped by a Sam Hildebrandt grand slam.
The Marauders put another run on the board in the bottom of the third when
Allison Chew scored on a single by
Ally Homa. Millersville's offense couldn't keep up with the Warriors as they responded with another six runs in the top of the fourth, making the score 13-2. Sneeringer capped the scoring and tallied her second hit and run of the day in the Millersville fourth, blasting a solo shot over the left-center field wall.
A tilt against Minot State, of North Dakota, went in a similar direction, as the Beavers beat the Marauders by a score of 8-2. Millersville staked starter
Sarah Bertoni to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, when Homa came around to score after reaching on an error by the Beavers. Minot State countered Millersville with a three-run bottom of the first, including a two-run blast off the bat of Jen Dixon.
Minot State plated two more runs in the second inning, making the score 5-1 before Millersville answered with a run in the top of the third. Sneeringer again came through with a hit toward short that snuck through for an error. Homa came around to score her second run of the game after doubling earlier in the inning. That was all Millersville would get, however, and Minot State plated three more runs over the final three innings.
Millersville is now mired in a nine-game slump since winning its season opener against Chowan on March 2. The team has tomorrow off before getting back on the diamond Wednesday in a doubleheader against American International College.
