Mercy, UMass Lowell Upend Millersville in Florida

Mercy Box Score | UMass Lowell Box Score

Clermont and Ocoee, FL – The Spring Games Tournament and the state of Florida have not been kind to the Marauder softball team. Saturday, the team dropped both of its morning games to Mercy College and UMass Lowell.

In their first game of the day against Mercy, the Marauders couldn't manage a run, being blanked 2-0. It was the second-straight game in which freshman Sarah Bertoni delivered a solid pitching performance for Millersville. Bertoni threw a complete game, surrendering just two runs, neither of which was earned. The freshman scattered six hits and struck out four with no walks over seven innings of work.

The two Mercy runs came in the fifth inning after a Millersville error that would have ended the inning. The next two batters doubled and singled, respectively, plating the runs. On the offensive side, Millersville was shut down by the pitching of Mary Sieber, who allowed just four hits in her shutout. Allison Chew accounted for two of the Marauders' four hits, with Alexandra Hoops and Ashley Cantiello collecting one each.

The team had its comeback bid ended in the seventh inning. Two batters after Hoops doubled to lead off the inning, Cantiello was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with one out. Bertoni grounded out, but moved the runners to second and third. The inning and game was ended when Wendy Wolff struck out to extinguish Millersville's rally hopes.

In the second game, the Marauders ran into a buzzsaw in the form of UMass Lowell. The Riverhawks improved to 6-1 by putting away Millersville in five innings, hanging an 8-0 defeat on the team. UMass Lowell put runs on the board in four of the five innings.

The Riverhawks got to Marauder starter Alicia Hughes early, with two runs crossing the plate in each of the first two innings. When Stephanie Kulp relieved Hughes in the third inning, Millersville's luck changed only temporarily, as Kulp retired all three Riverhawk hitters in order in the third. UMass Lowell got to Kulp in the fourth and fifth innings, putting three runs and one run on the board, respectively.

Millersville hitters could muster just two hits against strong pitching from Courtney Lanfranchi. The two Marauder hits came courtesy of Gabbie Berry and Emily Sneeringer in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

With the losses, Millersville drops to 1-7 on the season, mired in a seven-game funk. The Marauders hope to right the ship at the National Training Complex tomorrow in a 3 p.m. tilt with Molloy College.
