Xuan, Bald Eagles Too Much for Marauders in PSAC Quarterfinal

Box Score Lock Haven, Pa. – Entering the PSAC Tournament for the first time in seven seasons Tuesday night, Millersville faced the daunting task of going toe-to-toe with reigning PSAC East Champion Lock Haven. Though the Marauders battled point-for-point with the PSAC East's top seed, the Bald Eagles showed their championship experience in a three-set PSAC Quarterfinal victory to bring an end to Millersville's season.

Lock Haven won by set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-16. Millersville was strong in the match, hitting .154 as a team and committing just 14 errors on 104 attempts. But after a first set that saw the Marauders hit .170, Lock Haven's defense clamped down, dropping the Millersville hitting percentages to .156 and .120 in the second and third sets, respectively.

Just six Marauders recorded a kill, with the offense being led by Kayla Wallace and Taylor Smith, who each tallied six. Katie Lesinski and Samantha Agostini had five apiece, and Rhianna Kalescky and Jessica Franz each managed four more. Franz led the team in assists with 24 and added two service aces and nine digs to her totals.

Meanwhile, the Bald Eagle offense hit .262 despite 43 team digs and three total blocks from the Marauders. Brooklyn Smith again led the team with 12 digs and Sue Caramanico chipped in seven. Millersville's strong defensive effort was still not enough to slow three-time PSAC East Player of the Year Gao Xuan, who checked in with 18 kills on .552 hitting. Xuan committed just two hitting errors on 29 swings.

The Marauders end their season with a 14-18 record overall, and were 7-12 in PSAC East play during the regular season. Looking forward to the 2013 season, the team loses just one senior in Caramanico. Key returners for Millersville next season will be Franz and Lesinski, as well as a strong freshman class that was instrumental in this Marauder team's success.
