Women's Volleyball Can't Solve West Woes in Losses to Cal, Clarion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clarion, Pa. – After faltering in the first half of its two-day PSAC Crossover tour to Slippery Rock and Clarion, the women's volleyball team was seeking its first win against an opponent from the PSAC West in just under a year, and has just three such victories since the 2006 season, the last coming against Clarion on Oct. 7, 2011.

The team unfortunately had California (Pa.), which carried a 17-3 record coming in and Clarion, which was seeking retribution for last year's defeat, on its Saturday slate. The Vulcans and Golden Eagles topped the Marauders 3-0 and 3-1, respectively.

The Vulcans' three-set victory came on scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-8. Rebecca Roman registered seven kills and had an efficient .333 attack percentage. Katie Lesinski added a team-high eight kills but couldn't get going. The reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year was held to a -.032 hitting percentage. On the defensive side of the net, Brooklyn Smith led the team with 20 digs, while Taylor Smith dug out eight more Vulcan kill attempts. Sue Caramanico served up three aces.

The homestanding Golden Eagles exacted revenge on Millersville in the nightcap, taking a four-set victory to send the visitors to 7-11, 1-7 PSAC East. Clarion put the visiting Marauders in a 1-0 hole with a 25-18 first-set win. Millersville rallied to win the second set 26-24 before Clarion finished off the Marauders with 25-13 and 25-21 scores in the third and fourth sets, respectively.

Despite the loss, Lesinski had a solid offensive output, posting 11 kills and hitting .265 on 30 attempts. Lesinski got help from Samantha Agostini, who knocked down 10 kills and Kayla Wallace, who added seven more. Jessica Franz was responsible for setting up the offense, tallying 35 assists to go along with five digs. Caramanico added two more aces for a total of five on the day and also posted 15 digs, while Brooklyn Smith had 20 more digs for an even 40 on the day.

Clarion's offense was too strong, however, as it hit .338 for the match even though the Marauders were able to dig out 42 attack attempts and block five more. The Golden Eagle offense was led by Carlie Bieranowski, who finished on a match-high 14 kills and hit .355 on 31 swings.

The Marauders take to the road for the 14th time in their last 15 matches on Wednesday when they take on Philadelphia University. Millersville owns a 5-1 all-time record against the Rams and swept its next opponent, 3-0, in 2011.
