Box Score 2 Slippery Rock, Pa. – The Marauders were coming off the type of win last Friday that can boost a team's confidence, besting Kutztown in PSAC East divisional play to get their first conference win. Friday's PSAC Crossover at Slippery Rock produced different results, however, as the team was tripped up by Indiana (Pa.) and Slippery Rock in twin 3-0 defeats, dropping the team's record to 7-10 (1-6 PSAC East).
Millersville dropped its first match against the Crimson Hawks in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15.
Kayla Wallace had another strong performance offensively with seven kills on 17 attempts for a hitting percentage of .294, which was good for tops on the team. Outside of Wallace, however, the team had a hitting percentage of .000 with 22 kills against 22 errors on 89 attempts.
The Crimson Hawk defense held the Marauders at bay the entire match, not allowing Millersville to eclipse a .111 hitting percentage in any of the three sets. On the other side of the net, IUP had a strong offensive attack led by Morgan Cerveny, who finished on 13 kills and hit .355 while Megan Schneider posted a .545 attack percentage.
The Millersville defense blocked five attacks in total, and Wallace had three block-assists to pace the team in that category.
Brooklyn Smith dug out a match-high 20 kill attempts, but the efforts of the Marauders' two freshman performers weren't enough to overcome an attack percentage of .281 from IUP. The Crimson Hawks never dipped below a .226 hitting percentage in three sets.
In the back end of Friday's Crossover action, Wallace turned in another strong effort, with seven more kills and
Rebecca Roman knocked down nine kills to lead Millersville's offense. Despite the solid showings from both Wallace and Roman, The Rock was able to sweep Millersville by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 26-24 as the Marauders kept every set close.
The difference in three matches was 10 points and the Marauders had their chances. However, where The Rock played mistake-free, Millersville cost itself a win; Slippery Rock committed just 15 attack errors to the Marauders' 25. In addition to forcing Millersville's 25 hitting errors, The Rock limited the Marauders to .120 hitting as a team.
Jessica Franz set the table for the offense with 30 assists and played error-free with four kills on seven attempts for a .571 attack percentage. In the Marauders' second match, senior
Sue Caramanico was the anchor on the defensive end, digging out a match-high 24 kill attempts.
Millersville will have to put the two Friday losses in the rearview mirror and have a short memory, as the team jumps back onto the court Saturday. The Marauders have two more matches in their PSAC Crossover as they travel to Clarion to take on California (Pa.) at 12:30 p.m. and the homestanding Golden Eagles at 6 p.m.
