Kutztown, Pa. – Traveling to Kutztown Saturday, the Marauders were looking for a season-sweep of the Golden Bears and to improve their spot in the PSAC East standings. Millersville did just that with a 3-2 win to bump its record to 11-14 and 5-10 in the PSAC East. In the process, the Marauders dropped the Golden Bears to 12-17 and 3-12 in PSAC East play.
The Marauders dropped the first set, 26-24, but answered back in the second set with a 25-22 win. After falling behind 2-1 with a third-set loss of 25-14, Millersville again rallied, winning the fourth set by a 25-13 margin and taking the fifth set, 18-16 to sweep the season series between the teams.
Millersville got banner performances from a pair of freshmen. The Marauders had a match- and career-high 15 kills on .464 hitting from Samantha Agostini to pace the team. Those 15 kills from Agostini were part of a double-double performance that allowed her to lead the team in both categories.
Taylor Smith also turned in her best performance of the year, knocking down 10 kills and digging out 10 more on the defensive side of the net as part of her first career double-double. Katie Lesinski also added 11 kills to the Millersville attack that saw the team post 60 in total on a .138 attack percentage.
Defensively, Millersville did not have the blocks it typically does, with just two blocked kill attempts. The Marauders were active defensively, however, with 75 digs. Four players posted double figures in that category including Agostini and Smith. Jessica Franz also had a strong all-around performance, pacing the Marauder attack with 36 assists, five blocks, seven digs and an ace. Millersville had nine aces in total.
After the big win, the Marauders come home tomorrow to face Davis & Elkins at Pucillo Gymnasium. Millersville plays the Senators at Pucillo Gymnasium at 2 p.m. Sunday.
