Hershey, Pa. – Junior Amber Rohrer has played in the PSAC Women's Golf Championship just twice, but to interim coach Ron Weaver, she's an old veteran. He not only expects her to play well this weekend but to also guide her two freshman teammates in their first visit to the conference championships.
The two-day PSAC Championship begins Friday morning from the Hershey Country Club East Course, which is renowned for its length and difficulty. It is the same course that will host Division II Men's Golf Championships in May.
“We are going to reach out to (Amber) for her calmness to pass on to the freshmen,” said Weaver. “I don't think they realize that PSAC's is such a big tournament yet. They will figure it out when they get there. It's run differently, it's a bigger arena, and it's more serious. Her experience, saying 'It's just another tournament, we've done this. Just relax and play hard (is valuable."
Rohrer placed 16th at the league championship as a freshman and 25th as a sophomore, but those tournaments took place at Hershey Links. Last season, Rohrer placed in the top 10 in seven of eight events, and she continued that trend by placing in the top 10 in her first two events of 2012. Rohrer, however, hasn't played with the Marauders since Sept. 23.
In her absence, freshman Jaimie Wharton has emerged as a golfer that could battler for a spot high on the leaderboard this weekend. Wharton is slightly behind Rohrer for the team's best scoring average at 87.7. She's placed in the top half of every tournament and cracking the top 10 in three of five. She's quickly proven that she belongs as a golfer in the PSAC. According to Weaver, it's all about her mentality.
“She's not scared,” said Weaver. “She wants to improve. She's not scared to go out and try to play great. Jaimie is ready to play, wants to improve and wants to win. She doesn't really enjoy not winning.”
Freshman Kendal Olear is also trending in a positive direction. She's played in all five tournaments and has displayed improvement each week.
The first group tees off Friday at 9:03 a.m.
