Game 2
Shippensburg, Pa. - In the spring of 2000, Ryan Brink was completing his Millersville baseball career as the program's hits leader and leading the team to a PSAC East title. On Friday in Shippensburg,
Derek Kline moved past Brink as Millersville's Hit King with his 221st hit, and after the Marauders dominated Shippensburg by scores of 13-5 and 8-3, Kline has his club eyeing the same PSAC East prize.
In the second inning of game one, Kline smacked the first pitch he saw between the shortstop and third baseman for a single and the school record. He passed Brink, who is a member of the Millersville Athletic Hall of Fame, and moved into 17th place in PSAC history.
Kline's record-breaker also came against the team that cut him. After starting his career at Shippensburg, he transferred to Millersville and immediately won the 2008 PSAC East Rookie of the Year award.
Kline went on to total three hits in the doubleheader, and the Marauders (27-7, 14-4 PSAC East) recorded 24 in the two games.
Millersville's lineup continued to pound the opposition's pitching. After scoring 25 runs against Mansfield on Thursday, the Marauders totaled 21 runs Friday, and they started immediately. Shippensburg's game one starter Tom Bush (5-1) retired the first two batters of the inning, but the trouble starter after issuing a walk to Kline. Millersville went on to score four runs in the inning and tacked on two more in the second and four more in the third.
Millersville scored at least one run in five of the seven innings. Seven starters recorded a hit and eight drove in at least one run.
Mike August and
Corey Phelan both recorded three hits and drove in two runs. Kline and
Chris Edgar also tallied a pair of hits and plated two.
Not only was Kline busy at the plate, but he picked up the win on the mound. He improved to 5-1 on the year after scattering 11 hits and allowing five runs in four innings. Freshman
Adam Zipko worked three shutout innings in relief.
The onslaught continued in game two as the Marauders posted four runs in the first and built an 8-1 lead by the end of the third inning.
Brooks Rothschild (7-1) cruised, allowing three runs—two earned—on three hits and four walks. He fanned three batters. Nick Umberger (3-4) took the loss and despite allowing eight runs, he pitched the full seven innings.
Carlos Medina led the Marauders at the plate with three hits, two runs and a RBI.
Millersville looks to take the series with Shippensburg Saturday in a doubleheader Saturday at Marauder Park. First pitch is 1 p.m.
