Millersville Downs ESU to Pick Up First Conference Win

Box Score

Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's volleyball snapped a four-match losing streak and earned its first PSAC victory of the season by defeating East Stroudsburg 3-0 on Friday evening. The Marauders won the sets by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 to improve to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the PSAC on the year.

Millersville came out strong in the first set, holding the Warriors (4-11, 0-5 PSAC) to a .029 attack percentage and holding three players to negative hitting percentages. The clubs swapped points for the first part of the first set, but Millersville jumped out to an 18-12 lead and East Stroudsburg could not recover.

The Marauders scored seven points to ESU's four to close the set. Only three Warriors registered kills in the set. Alyson Stark led all scorers with six kills.

In set two, it was East Stroudsburg's turn to jump out to an early lead. The Warriors stood on top 8-1, but Millersville quickly gained momentum and turned the tables, tallying seven-straight points to knot the score.

The squads tied the score four separate times throughout second-set action, the last occurring at 16-16. The Marauders, again, went on a scoring streak, registering nine points to the Warriors' three in the set victory.

Allison Huss and Jessica Franz led the Marauder offense with six kills and 11 assists, respectively. Millersville maintained a balanced defense, with five players collecting more than one dig.

With victory close at hand, the Marauders took immediate control of the third set. MU built a lead of five or more points for most of the set, including a 19-9 advantage mid-way through the set. Millersville hit a bump in the road, however, that East Stroudsburg took advantage of.

The Warriors went on a scoring run of their own, totaling 13 of the next 18 points. The Marauders almost let the set slip from under them, but while holding on to a narrow 24-23 lead, a service error by ESU allowed Millersville to escape with the set and the match.

Stark registered a match-high 14 kills for East Stroudsburg, and Allye Preziosi boasted 31 assists.

Huss tallied nine kills on the night, and Alyssa Ott chipped in eight while Mary Paul added seven. Franz put up 21 assists for Millersville. Defensively, Sue Caramanico collected 10 digs.

Millersville returns to action on Saturday with a tri-match against Lock Haven and Glenville State in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders face the Lady Eagles at 1 p.m., followed by the Pioneers at 5 p.m. Lock Haven and Glenville State will match up at 3 p.m.
