Marauders Prevail Over Philadelphia in Five Sets

Box Score

Philadelphia, Pa. – For the second time in as many matches the Millersville women's volleyball team found itself down 2-0, staring defeat in the eyes. And just like they had done before, the Marauders buckled down and regained control to claim a 3-2 victory, this time overcoming host Philadelphia Wednesday evening at the Gallagher Center.

Millersville (10-10) struggled in the first set, posting a .022 attack percentage, and only five players scored. Philadelphia (9-5) totaled 16 kills and committed only eight errors en route to a 25-18 set victory.

The Marauders took an 8-6 lead early in set two and remained on top for the majority of the set. The Rams, however, knotted the score for the first time since 6-6 at 20-20 and went on to claim the next five points and stun Millersville, 25-20.

The squads exchanged the lead eight times and tied the score 17 times in the third set alone. With a knotted score at 23 and the match victory on the line, Philadelphia hit a service error to put the Marauders up one point.

After a Ram timeout Kellie Conahan stood behind the service lined and slammed home an ace to give her team a 25-23 victory and keep the Marauders in the contest.

Millersville came into the fourth set revived, knocking down 11 kills and committing only three errors. Down 16-13 midway through the set, Allison Huss served her team back to a 17-17 score and gave the Marauders the spark they needed.

Scoring five of the next eight points, Millersville positioned itself three points shy of tying the match. After two Marauder kills and a Ram attack error, MU came away with a fourth set win by a 25-21 score.

The two clubs traded scores in the fifth set, neither accumulating more than two points in a row. On top 14-13, Huss banged down a kill as Millersville won 15-13 and completed its come-from-behind win of the season.

Three Marauders registered double-digit kills on the night. Alyssa Ott recorded 11 and Mary Paul added 10. Huss boasted a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs, while committing only one error.

Katie Pisano posted 27 assists and Jessica Franz put up 17. Millersville demonstrated a balanced defense, with five players collecting 10 or more digs. Katie Galuska totaled 13 and Sue Caramanico chipped in 12.

Millersville looks to continue its three-match win streak this weekend in Erie. The Marauders face Mercyhurst, Gannon and Edinboro in a trio of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover matches.
