Millersville, Pa. – The Millersville women's volleyball team dropped a hard-fought, five-set match to non-conference opponent Holy Family Tuesday evening in Pucillo Gymnasium. As the visiting Tigers extend their win streak to seven matches, the Marauders fell to 12-18 and Holy Family improved to 16-9 on the year.
The clubs battled back and forth throughout the match with neither team winning a set by more than five points. The Marauders found themselves down 19-13 in the first set and clawed their way back with five-straight points to narrow the deficit to one.
The Tigers again found themselves on top with a 24-21 advantage as Millersville tallied two scores to make it a one-point set again. Holy Family escaped, however, with the win at 25-23.
Millersville came away with a victory in the second set by an identical 25-23 score. The Tigers went up 7-4 in the beginning of the set, but the Marauders answered to knot the score at 8-8.
Mary Paul stepped up and served her team through nine-straight points to put MU on top 16-8, and the squad held onto the lead for the remainder of action.
The seesaw continued in set three as Holy Family picked up a 25-21 win. The clubs saw nine tied scores, the last coming at 11-11 before the Tigers took off. Holy Family tallied nine of the next 11 points and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set.
The Marauders knotted the match at 2-2 after coming away with a 25-20 fourth-set triumph. Just like the three sets prior, the squads saw several ties and lead changes. Millersville took its final lead of the night, however, at 18-17 and never looked back.
Holy Family took immediate control in the fifth set and went on top, 4-0.
Allison Huss came in to serve her team back to a 5-5 tie, keeping the Marauders in the contest.
The Tigers went on scoring streaks in the set, registering three-straight points to take an 8-6 lead, followed by another three-point stretch to extend a 14-10 lead. Millersville knocked down another point but Holy Family countered to win the set 15-11 and earn the match victory.
Jesse Miller led the Marauder offense with 13 kills and Paul added 12.
Jessica Franz posted 23 assists while
Katie Pisano had 19.
Defensively,
Devin Fortney collected a team-high 12 digs. The Millersville unit collectively boasted a season-high 14 blocks. Paul and
Rebecca Roman tallied six blocks apiece.
The Marauders host a doubleheader with conference opponent Cheyney on Friday evening. The first match is scheduled for 5 p.m.
