Millersville, Pa. - The Millersville men's tennis team had its stiffest challenge in weeks, but still managed to come away with a 6-2 victory over PSAC foe East Stroudsburg and extend its win streak to seven. The team is now 8-3 overall, 1-0 in conference play and 6-1 since opening the second half of the season on March 1.
The Marauders won four out of the six singles matches played, but got off to a rocky start as No.1 Drew Slocum dropped the first set of his match against ESU's Will Norris 3-6. Slocum turned the match around, however, and finished the second and third sets swiftly, 6-2, 6-3.
The Warriors evened the team score 1-1 with the second match, as ESU's Mark Covert downed Millersville's Donald Swantko, but not before going to losing a first-set tie-breaker. The final score was 6-7 (4-7). 6-4, 6-1.
The third match of the day also went to a third set, but it had a better result for Millersville. Marauder Andrew Sorgi beat Rob Mikolon 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-5.
The next Marauder to claim victory was Henry Ben, who beat Warrior Andrew Makos 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The only straight-set victory in singles play was the final match, in which Marauder Dusty Speicher fell to Warrior Dalton Barton 5-7, 3-6.
The Marauders won two out of the three doubles matches, to seal their team win. Each team agreed ahead of time to play one doubles set with an eight-game minimum. The first one pit Marauders Slocum and Sorgi against Warriros Norris and Covert. Millersville prevailed 8-6.
The Marauders dropped the second doubles match, however, as the ESU combo of Mikolon and Ontell beat Millersville's Speicher and Treires 8-2.
In the final match, Swantko and Ben finished with a Millersville victory over Makos and Barton, 8-4.
Millersville will face another conference rival Friday, when it takes on Bloomsburg at the McComskey Tennis Courts. The Huskies are 6-0 overall and, like Millersville, are 1-0 in conference matches.
