Game 2
Petersburg, Va. - The Millersville baseball team totaled 16 runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Virginia State to pick up its first wins of the season. The Marauders cruised to an 8-1 victory in the opener and rolled to an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
Junior starter Ryan Stauffer hurled a complete-game gem in game one. He evened his record at 1-1 on the season and helped the Marauders (2-4) to their first win as well. Stauffer allowed just one run on five hits, struck out seven and walked none.
Stauffer had plenty of support from the Marauders' bats. Freshman Chris Edgar, who totaled four hits and five RBIs in the two games, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in game one. It was his two-run single in the first inning that got the Marauders on the board and in front with a 2-0 lead.
Millersville quickly grew the lead as Derek Kline ripped an RBI triple in the third, and Ryan McCormick drove in run in the fourth. The Marauders added two more in sixth on a two-run single from Lance Miller, and two more in the seventh when Kent Gerdes produced a sacrifice fly, and Edgar drove in his third run of the day with a single.
The Marauders finished with eight hits and were helped by four Virginia State errors. Three of the eight runs scored were unearned.
In game two, Virginia State scored in the bottom of the first off starter Forrest Mengle (1-1), but he managed to settle in and earn the mound win by allowing four runs on six hits, striking out five and walking two in 5.2 innings.
The Marauders also received some fine work out of the bullpen. Adam Koppenhaver escaped the sixth by picking up a strikeout, and Andrew Clemens pitched a perfect seventh with two strikeouts.
Millersville picked up two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead, but Virginia State evened the score with a solo homer in the fourth. It didn't take long for Millersville to retake the lead, though, as Andrew Dochterman led off the top of the fifth with a solo shot, sparking a six-run inning for the Marauders. Millersville recorded four extra base hits in the inning including RBI doubles from Edgar, Miller and Michael DeSanto.
Millersville finished the game with nine hits and were led by Edgar's two hits, two runs, two RBIs and stolen base.
The Marauders stay in Petersburg, Va., for a doubleheader Sunday against Virginia State. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
