Game 1
Game 2
Petersburg, Va. - After dropping four-straight to start the season, the Millersville baseball team responded by winning four in a row. Sunday at Virginia State, the Marauders evened their record and completed a series sweep with a 13-2 win in game one and a 10-1 triumph in game two.
The Marauders (4-4) outscored Virginia State 39-8 in the four-game series. Millersville piled up 20 hits on Sunday afternoon including 14 in the opener.
In game one, four different Marauders tallied two hits and 10 different players recorded at least one. Derek Kline, Cody Wile and Michael DeSanto all in two runs as well. It didn't take long for the Marauders to get started either, as they raced to a 7-0 lead after the top of the first inning.
Virginia State retired the Lance Miller to start the inning, but Miles Gallagher followed with a double, starting a run of eight-straight hits for the Marauders.
The seven-run first inning would have been plenty for freshman starter Kyle Belanchik. He surrendered two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out four in five innings to earn the first win of his career.
Michael Mesveskas and David Busch each worked a scoreless inning of relief as well.
The Marauders' bats cooled off a bit in the nightcap, as the team managed just six hits. But it drew six walks, capitalize on five Virginia State errors and swiped seven bases.
Millersville struck early and often, scoring two in the first, one in the second and three in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Starter Jason Long worked three shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Adam Koppenhaver picked up the mound victory after striking out three in 1.2 innings. Derek Kline and Andrew Clemens also pitched two shutout innings of relief.
Wile led the offense with two hits and two runs. Scott Slemebecker also drove in three runs.
Millersville travels to Anderson on Feb. 28 for a four-game weekend series.
