Pembroke, N.C. - The Braves of UNC-Pembroke pounded out 17 hits in a 14-4 triumph of visiting Millersville Sunday afternoon, completing a four-game series sweep and sending the Marauders back to Pennsylvania still in search of their first victory of 2009.
UNC-Pembroke (8-2) scored 47 runs on the weekend while Millersville (0-4) managed 12 total runs, including just five in the final three games.
On Sunday, the Braves used an eight-run third inning to blow open the game. The first five batters to the plate singled, bouncing starter Kyle Belanchick (0-1) from the game. Freshman Keith Bires couldn't cool off the Braves' bats as they scored five more runs--three of which were credited to Belanchik.
Millersville responded with a pair of runs off Josh Bagley (1-0) in the top of the fourth. Derek Kline, who finished with two hits, set the table with a single. Andrew Dochterman followed with a single of his own, and Keith Spencer plated Kline with an infield single. Dochterman later scored on a Scott Slembecker RBI single.
Millersville, however, couldn't not pull any closer. Three UNC-Pembroke relievers pitched shutout innings following Bagley's exit in the sixth.
The Marauders return to the field on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Virginia State.
