Millersville, Pa. — A nine day layoff for Millersville's women's basketball team was clearly visible on Monday night. The Marauders struggled to find the hoop all evening, but did just enough to earn a 57-45 win over Goldey-Beacom at Pucillo Gymnasium.
Having not started a season 7-0 since the 1972-73 season, the Marauders were hoping that a struggling Goldey-Beacom squad would be the perfect remedy to that statistic. Instead, Millersville (7-0) came out as cold as the December temperatures from the floor, allowing the one-win Lightning to hang around. A layup from
Raquel Green and a pair of free throws by
Aiesha Bellamy were the only points MU could generate throughout the first 9:20 of the half.
Goldey-Beacom had its own offensive deficiencies, however. Millersville pushed its slim margin to five with 5:44 remaining in the half, but GBC, which missed eight of its first 10 shots, responded with back-to-back 3-pointers and a jumper from Jacinda Jones to tie the game at 16.
The Marauders would carry a 27-23 lead to the break, thanks in large part to points in the paint and second chance opportunities. MU outscored the undersized Lightning 12-2 down low and held a 10-0 edge in second chance points. The teams combined to shoot 16-of-51 in the opening 20 minutes, with neither squad converting on more than 34-percent of its first half opportunities.
Mashira Newman (7 points) and Green (6 points) paced the Marauders, while Jones and Janae Weldon teamed up to net 21 of Goldey-Beacom's 23 first half points.
The Lightning (1-7) made an early second half statement that they were not just content to hang around. Four straight layups to start the period, interrupted by just one from Millersville's Dominique Stroman, gave Goldey-Beacom its first lead of the game, 31-29, with 16:06 to go. The visitors would hold the lead for 3:18, but lose it in the midst of a 12-0 Millersville run.
Jenna Craig,
Emily Balogh,
Aurielle Mosley, and Stroman all contributed to the run. Balogh's layup with 8:35 remaining capped it and had GBC coach Jen Carleton wanting a timeout.
The Lightning weren't able to regroup on this evening, with the Marauders running the lead to double-figures in the late going. Green was consistent, netting another six points in the second half and finishing with a team-high 12 for the Marauders. The senior also pulled down six boards. Newman scored in double-figures for the fifth time in seven games, potting 11. Newman earned four more steals in the contest and was a perfect 6-of-6 at the line. Craig, who registered just seven rebounds in her last two games, grabbed a team-high nine.
Jones and Weldon continued to provide the Lightning with a majority of their offense. Jones racked up a game-high 17 points, while Weldon contributed 15. The teams combined to shoot just 32-of-100 (32-percent) in the game, and Millersville forced 30 Goldey-Beacom turnovers. The Marauders have forced 30 or more turnovers in four straight games and five-of-seven to begin the season.
After it's defeat of Goldey-Beacom, Millersville is now 4-0 against Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponents this season. It's a record the Marauders will try and extend to 5-0 next Monday in Philadelphia against Holy Family. MU will also be in search of its second 8-0 start in program history. The last time a Millersville team started 8-0 was 1925-26, the school's only undefeated season. Game time next Monday is scheduled for 7 p.m.
